ocean erosion mtg nov `14

this committee is meeting again this week. i would suggest that anyone concerned with the direction this group is headed attend. this is a group that is meeting to decide how we should deal with global warming/climate change here in pacifica. managed retreat seems to be the ultimate goal.

say goodbye to the golf course, fairway park, rockaway, lower linda mar. ultimately, that is what will happen even if there is no "climate change".

i would venture to say that none of you knew about this meeting. see any public notices?

"even if there is no climate change" Tell it to the victims of hurricane Sandy. Inevitably, you can save houses near the golf course or the golf course... but not both. (as if you and your ilk really care about those homeowners).

Oh... and then there is this, posted today

Anon 2:12 PM, from the San Francisco Chronicle article you posted: "California is one of only nine states so far to develop comprehensive strategies and implement policies to deal with expected water shortages, droughts, shrinking snowpacks and other water-related problems if global temperatures increase this century as predicted by scientists, the Natural Resources Defense Council has reported."

Science and scientific methodology (problem solving) has always been the practical friend of the people your refer to as "your ilk", meaning "our ilk". "Green is good", except when the ideological mantra amounts to "do nothing, run for the hills." That advisement is about as reliable as the denial from those who dismiss observable climate change altogether.

You guys are all starting to sound like space cadet Sue Digree!

I remeber the 70's when the world was entering a new ice age that could last for decades and cover the world in a mass of ice a mile thick. Hmmmmmmmm
Science is a crap shoot when trying to predict something as complex as the weather. Everything that makes it so obvous we have global warming (there is always climate change. happens every day)could be proven wrong in 10 years. Global warming paranoia has made a lot of people millionaires. Take a look at Gore's wealth. Hasn't been a bad 12 years for old Al.
To make decisions on a theory is bad planning. To prepare for something that may or many not happen is costly, inefficient, and usually perpetuated by people that have an ulterior motive. Bomb shelter builders had a hay-day in the 50's. Battery and solar guys had a pretty good run on the government dime the last few years. That is, until they all started going bankrupt. I have an issue with a group coming into this town and planning how we are going to combat the ocean. You don't win, you delay the inevitable. Maybe for a very long time.

@Jacques Cousteau, Oui, c'est vrai, cherchez la lucre!

Cousteau 3:26 PM, no disrespect, but think I'll take NASA's word for climate change. Nice graph on the link for you to look at too.

The issue is not "bomb shelters", nor is it elective wars which occurred during the time Al Gore should have been President. Al Gore's Current TV has some pretty good programs and educational videos though.

Al Gore's Current TV is for sale. Capitalism at it's finest. Anon 3:44, is that pig-latin? Yea, and we lost 2 space shuttles because NASA made mistakes. A government entity releasing reports on accepted gov't position. Supporting it, of course.
And, anyone ever see the house good ole Gore lives in? Big carbon footprint. The old "do as I say, not as I do".

When you think California weather records only go back to the Gold Rush 1850's or so. Not even 200 years of data.

The earth normally cools and heats up its all a cycle.

Al Gore, should have won the election. Ya Meeh, but he didn't. He made millions of dollars with his nonsense.

Nasa is closed and they are going to build out Moffit Field when they are done cleaning up all the toxic waste.

Next topic Meeh.

oh great. now we have climate change deniers.

shouldn't they all live in arizona? they'd be happier there.

I'm more concerned with the magnetic fields of earth reversing. Now that is something we better prepare for. All the Boy Scout compasses won't work and GPS will be useless. Oh, if we have to look at a map again the world will be doomed!

@Doubting Thomas...in your Mother Tongue...actchway hetway oneyway.
Maybe we can get council meetings captioned in Pig Latin? Forget the audio! Can you see those interminable council communications given in Pig? Or Schlesinger rockin' along in Pig?

Wow I am so relieved that the city of pacifica is working on climate change and ocean erosion. they can't run a city so they've moved on. expect a breakthrough any day. you watch. right here.

Managed Retreat is the next nail in Pacifica's coffin.

Its all a smoke screen to get away from the police outsourcing to the sheriff and the upcoming bankruptcy.

Probably 1/3rd to half of the city is at risk to major flooding during a 100 year storm. Linda Mar is mostly below sea level.

In 1972 subtropical moisture from a Pacific late season storm got caught up in the jet stream with a cold storm from the gulf of Alaska and caused a rare October rain storm that flooded Lower Linda Mar.

A huge storm or a huge el nino winter and Pacifica is doomed.

The retaining wall at Beach Blvd will fall apart. Lower Fairway Park will be flooded along with Lower Linda Mar.

Being we do not have a real engineer working in the city I wouldn't want to own a house built in the last 15 years on a hillside slope or downhill slope.

Coastal living. A winter storm like the one in 1982 would be a disaster. Wonder if council has a plan to respond to a natural disaster? I'm thinking they couldn't coordinate a sing-along.
Maybe they can write letters to each other?

Anonymous said...

Well the first big storm is coming in this weekend. 4 day storm.

The storms are really wild up in the gulf of Alaska early this year.

Council has a plan. Hire a weather consultant to tell them what to do.

Gore had to give Tipper half!

It's not the council's job to respond to a disaster, it's police and fire. And yes, there is a plan. But if police are outsourced, the Sheriff will be responsible for coordinating our local disaster plan.

Anonymous said...

@128 Well then, outsourcing can't happen soon enough. It is reassuring to hear with authority that disaster response isn't Council's job. Not that I expected them to fill sand bags or clear storm drains. Maybe a little leadership? Oversight? Advocacy?Absent that, by all means, let the pros handle it. Council can handle the tears, hugs, somber faces.

@108 I don't remember the 70's. I was there, I just don't remember.

Anonymous said...

anon107 Ha! One of the budget cuts I want to see is that meteorologist that council keeps on yearly retainer to tell them which way the wind is blowing. We're broke here, people. I bet you feel the chill. If you need to see the breeze then put up a weathervane. Or, for the tech savvy, get the WeatherChannel app for your new iPad-mini. Who knew those things would come in handy?

Anonymous said...

@128 I guess this means no Stone in a roll-out coat. No Nihart and Digree as partners in a PPD cruiser? Hey, Big Mike looks like he could bust down some doors. I'm counting on Ervin to be the brains of the group and dispatch them all to Petaluma.

I don't believe the Coastal Commission allows all the construction to save buildings on the edge of sand cliffs.

You are never going to stop these cliffs from eroding away. It's been going on for a million years, it was going on when the bought these properties and it will continue to erode regardless of any efforts to stop it.
