Wow! Impressive clear cut victories by O'Neill and Ervin. Very clearly the voter's #1 choices in their individual races. Nobody else even close. Now they get this mess to deal with. Very small scale version of the fiscal mess Obama inherited from Bush except we don't have the US Treasury in our arsenal. I don't expect miracles, we face real hardship, but we'll be better run and city government will be more transparent with these two on board. Outstanding job Pacifica voters!

They didn't get Campbell elected but Ervin and Nihart were also endorsed and supported by folks like Verby and Leone. We'll have to see how far they're willing to go to honor that inclusiveness mantra. Not a total loss for the green people.

That's far from an endorsement by the same chapter of the Sierra Club that tried to shut down Sharp Park golf course. Nihart and Erin are worlds away from Campbell. Yes the greenies lost big. Mary Ann And Karen are both for highway 1 widening, Campbell was against it.

@229 Sure. Those were defining issues during the campaign. Once the giddiness subsides we'll see what we've elected. Politicians are the most pragmatic of creatures. A sign of real and meaningful change would be a quick and complete revamp of the Planning Commission. An all new Planning and Development Commission is a critical and very basic step council has to committ to and take.
Any of the candidates for the 4 year seat were acceptable, so I doubt many people will be upset with Ervin and Nihart winning. I voted for Vellone and Nihart, but have no problem with Ervin and Nihart.
If it was a one-on-one race with O'Neill vs. Campbell, or Spano vs. Campbell, either O'Neill or Spano would have won big. That O'Neill and Spano split the vote, yet both individually still had more votes than Campbell, clearly says something.
If that doesn't send a message that residents are tired of having the town run by those who are hostile to business and who think Pacifica is a big park instead of a city, I don't know what does.
Let's see if the small group of hippies that claim to speak for the town still have the gall to keep making that claim.
Oh who knows what this lot will be able to do. I voted O'Neill and Ervin only but this team will work. The problem is that Pacifica is so far down the crapper. The antidote for insolvency has to be more taxes. Any revenue from development is years away. Even draconian cuts probably wouldn't save us. I don't see this group having the political will for those kinds of cuts anyway. I'm willing to pay more taxes if things at city hall change quickly, become more open, and run smarter. There's a chance for that to happen, now.
There's going to be a new kind of green power in Pacifica. The kind you can spend. Might take some time, but we're on the way. I hope.

I'd say saving 1.5 million a year from police outsourcing would qualify for a good alternative to more taxes or cuts.
Maybe now with Dejarnett gone we can move forward on it. From what I hear it is NOT off the table.
This is our best chance to not only avoid bankruptcy and keep all our police working, but to market Pacifica using an in house professional.
Sincerely doubt it was ever really off the table. It just got lost in the mumbo jumbo during election season and what a stroke of luck that the idea had known enemies on council. Police outsourcing, can you think of a more incendiary and polarizing issue during a camplaign? Political kryptonite. Now that the nonsense is over, let's see how fast they can ramp up the proposal and give it real and public consideration. There's another election in 2 years. You dedicated public servants better hurry.

The 4 year crowd probably didn't seek the endorsement. Or want it. Ervin and Nihart already had local enviro support...LTEs from Verby, the Leones, others. Not every endorsement is an asset. Right Mr. Campbell?

anon638 You haven't been listening to the rhetoric. It's all about the blurring of the lines that have separated us in Pacifica. A place at the table for everyone. Kumbaya, etc. Generally results in gridlock but why not?
Funny Campbell (and followers) just don't understand that having the Sierra club backing was a liability. This is one of their gods. Hell John Mayberry even printed that letter in his column the same week I had a LTE calling Campbell out for their support. Thanks John.
O'Neill always had the edge with positive name recognition, Spano really ran a very good camplaign--probably the best of the three, and Campbell had that Sierra Club endorsement all to himself in this election and ran a very lackluster campaign.
Campbell drew 2954 votes. Each of them had 2 other votes to cast in the 4 year race. And they probably did use those votes. They voted for Campbell but they also voted for Ervin, Nihart, or, in smaller numbers, for Vellone. Even in so-called polarized Pacifica, candidates have to appeal to and consider a broad range of voters in order to win.
Moderation in all things produces a better outcome.
