Excellent Palmetto Photo! I'm old enough to remember eating at Kevin's Cottage when that was a restaurant...anyone else? It would be nice to have a Stacks or some kind of place for saturday/sunday breakfast on Palmetto again where yuppies, puppies and their offspring could gather!

9:44 dream on. What you see, is what you get for Palmetto Avenue.

Palmetto is a nasty looking street.
Run down businesses, trailer park, low-end homes, empty lots, and the OWWTP aka Pacifica's monument to its own enduring stupidity. Rough looking. All that's missing are the hookers--they are still missing, right? It's the low-rent district. No business owner with other options is going to locate there.

And no amount of lights and landscaping or utility undergrounding or council bull will change that.

Palmetto is a cute beachy street and it has the potential to attract even more people than it does now. I'd rather live in Sharp Park than Linda Mar any day. Notice most of the crimes in Pacifica are in Linda Mar including our latest murder? So don't tell me how bad Palmetto is until you clean up your own neighborhood. "Low end houses" what does that even mean anymore with $600K homes everywhere? We're a tight neighborhood that keeps crime in check (most of the time). So go look in the mirror before trashing my neighborhood. We have character and aren't a bunch of cookie cutter homes in a boring area.

Anyway sit back and watch as Palmetto thrives. First step is already happening.

Palmetto has no reason to go there. No shops,no restaurants,no pubs, nothing. Never had nothing never will.

Anonymous said...

^ Really? Palmetto has no shops? No restaurants? No Pubs? Maybe you should drive down there and open your eyes. It has all that and more.

Anonymous said...

anon 709 Palmetto may be close to the ocean but it's neither cute nor beachy. People tried to revitalize it in the 80's with those beach-cottage style buildings that housed Balstreri's and then Kevin's Cottage. Even a candy store. It just is not an attractive area. It's gritty and run down from one end to the other--like most of Pacifica. Nothing in the city plans is going to change Palmetto, but if you have to live there of course you'd have a soft spot for the place.

Anonymous said...

Oh c'mon anon 824. You live there and you're loyal, we get that, but to suggest Palmetto has anything in the way of food or drink or shopping that would attract visitors or even most Pacificans is ridiculous. Undergrounding the utilities and improving the landscape is not going to fix Palmetto or attract money to Pacifica. Might be nice for property-owners and renters in the very immediate area--until it's vandalized, but as urban renewal, it's insignifcant. Hope the money all comes from outside sources or it may not be completed. Pacifica's got less than squat for this stuff.

Sit back and watch naysayers, ha.

For those who might be interested, Palmetto was originally Old County Road and the connector between Daly City and the towns (Manor, Sharp Park, Rockaway, Pedro Valley, before the incorporation of Pacifica (1957) and the construction of the freeway in the mid-60's. As with many "town centers," it went into a steep dive once the flow of traffic declined.

Anonymous said...

Three charming little houses does not make a charming street. This street is a industrial street.

Anonymous said...

Old County Road is in Rockaway always has been.

Anonymous said...

817 and 927 are both true statements. And you can't make a silk purse out of a sow's ear.

Anonymous said...

@709 Don't be talking like we have a crimewave. You know what you refer to as "our latest murder" was also our first in a decade or more.

What is needed is a big electronic readerboard framed by a 40-60 foot sign that says, "Visit Historic Palmetto Blvd-next exit". The readerboard could rotate different messages from / about different businesses there, or community messages and "The Time" and "Temperature". Maybe Clear Channel could give the school district a rental income if they put it on the school property next to the freeway. I think that might get some attention and traffic... Just sayin!

Anonymous said...

Again, Linda Mar and Park Pacifica have way more crime than Sharp Park. All the little snot nosed brats in the BOV think they're entitled. Plus there's nothing to do but drink mommy and daddy's booze or take their pills. That's why there's so much trouble at Terra Nova HS. I lived back there it was so noisy you couldn't sleep at night. Speaking of TN that traffic is horrendous and adds an extra 20 mins on your commute. No way I would I live back there ever again with the boring neighborhoods and cookie cutter houses. "SOME" BOV people are just jealous of Sharp Park because we actually have character. BTW most Pacifica people north of Rockaway don't shop in Linda Mar very often either. But almost all of Pacifica travels through Sharp Park everyday. Ha. So sit back and watch "crap-don't-stink" Lindamarians, Sharp Park is going through some big changes and you can't do nothin about it but continue to be a hater. haha

Visit our Vistor Center that is closed on the weekends.

Anonymous said...

Gee Whiz Anon 11:56 chill out. We all live in this town together and each and everyone of the districts has it's own characters and likes and dislikes. I love all of Pacifica.

Anonymous said...

I nominate 1156 to wear a sandwich board and promote all that is Palmetto and Sharp Park. Roam the off-ramp or maybe Rockaway since the Visitor's Center is clearly not a Chamber priority. See what you can attract!

Anonymous said...

hey some people like the bayview district or portrero hill. some people could like sharp park and palmetto. sure they could.

Anonymous said...

@117 Put up a sign to attract drivers on hiway 1 to Historic Palmetto Blvd? Why on earth would you want to cause even 1 of our rare and precious tourists to floor it to get to HMB ? I'll bet you think the plovers are going to bring in big bucks, too? How you feel about the LBC? Goldmine, is it? Yeah, you just leave the tourists alone. Rockaway is just ahead and they can't miss LM and Pedro Point.

Anonymous said...

329 As unbelievable as it may be in "blue collar w/artists" Pacifica, I think that poster@1156 has class issues.

Anonymous said...

Anon @9:27 a.m. I believe that Old County Road to be the original name of Palmetto and that it most likely wound it's way through Rockaway on the way to Pedro Valley. However, why quibbble. Perhaps the Bakwell family who owned Old County Market or the Anderson family who operated the market at Paloma for so many years could chime in.
I'm not a native Pacifica so can't always claim that I know it all. My knowledge of things Pacifica only go back to when Oceana High School was still a farm and I used to play with some of the kids who lived there, circa 1958. Anon@8:17 a.m.

"Linda Mar and Park Pacifica have way more crime than Sharp Park"

This just in: smaller neighborhood has less crime than much bigger neighborhood; also, water is wet. All this and more coming up during the 11 o'clock hour on KDUH.

Anonymous said...

Yeah, KDUH is big here in Pacifica, real big.
And 701 anon I have it on good authority from someone who's a Genuine Pacifica Relic that you are correct about Old County Road and where it went. Palmetto was Old County Road at one time and the little segment in Rockaway is what is left of Old County Road.

Well played. You may advance to the next round!

Anonymous said...

@854 Yeah, West Sharp Park is way smaller and with large areas on Palmetto given over to commercial/industrial it is much less residential.

Isn't that the purpose of a city chamber of commerce?

Btw I see ads from the Daly City/Colma chamber on TV. Why no ads from Pacifica chamber?

+1

It's worth repeating this over and over, because wishful thinking is not going to help Pacifica survive.

Anonymous said...

815 We're still diving. Bottom coming up, soon.

Anonymous said...

When was Palmetto called Old County Road?

I have been this isn't true.

Anonymous said...

"Btw I see ads from the Daly City/Colma chamber on TV. Why no ads from Pacifica chamber?"

they can't put a commercial together cuz it would end up promoting ALL businesses in pacifica and the chamber must punish the city's wayward businesses who are not of the double-super-platinum-circle-of-trust membership level

we had to destroy our businesses in order to save our businesses

seacrest, out!

The chamber is now only half a phone book.

I'll be returning my Chamber phone book directly to the visitor center. Enough already with the Chamber Board's various witch hunts and follies.

The only thing that would get Bray down to the chamber is free coffee and dounts!

Anonymous said...

Ok, we got Bray, now what will get the Chamber down to the Visitor's Center?

Thrilla near Marvilla.

This Chris Porter dude is picking a big fight with Todd Bray.

Anonymous said...

600, Chris Porter dude??? What city do you live in???

Besides Chris 441 (female) asked, "which witch hunts and follies are we speaking of Todd?" That's a question, not necessarily "picking a fight" -- dude.

Bray, will never answer a simple question

Maybe

All proceeds from the fight will be donated to the "Friends Today and Tomorrow of a Sustainably Developed, Highway 1 Alternativeless, Bankrupted Pathetica"

Really a dumb move for the CoC to exclude names of businesses not paying for ad. It will be the death of the book. Once people realize it is a incomplete book they will stop using it. They stop using it then nobody sees the paid advertisers. Nobody sees the paid advertisers then they drop out. They drop out end of book. I suggest they look at every other yellow page book whick knows they must include all listings paid or not otherwise even less people will use them. Nobody uses yellowpage books anymore but at least the Pacifica directory still has people using it. They use it because it's a fast easy way to find ANY Pacifica business. The minute they pick it up and find out what they're looking for isn't in there is the time the go on Google.

Anonymous said...

"the Pacifica directory still has people using it. They use it because it's a fast easy way to find ANY Pacifica business. The minute they pick it up and find out what they're looking for isn't in there is the time the go on Google"
- I think that's true. Perhaps the Chamber wants out of the directory business. It's an awful lot of work to put together. That's why Don E. was paid extra for doing it. And that's why the chamber outsourced it the last time which was a disaster. It's beyond the capacity of the staff and the only revenue is from the ads. Nobody at the chamber wants to work that hard. They raised the dues instead.

Anonymous said...

Someone, not me, has said, 'Print is Dead'. Lets get with the times. I asked a local realtor how many referrals were got off the chamber directory over the many years advertising (over ten), and the answer was One. Pretty good, but only one. Yelp, google, etc. provide alternatives to look up and find businesses. I think the Chamber could better use its energy and staff time to promote businesses online, and live in person, because soon, everyone will universally get their business search info via internet. A Chamber business directory, no matter which chamber produces, is becoming an anachronism. Yellow Pages, the phone company got out of that business years ago. Save some trees this way. Chamber should really rethink having a directory. I am a chamber member.

Anonymous said...

The $64,000 dollar question is.

Who will file for bankruptcy first.

Paciifca Chamber of Commerce

The City of Pacifica

Anonymous said...

The chamber directory is the perfect symbol for funky old Pacifica...something that doesn't work. As usual in Pacifica, it's not a clean death because no one has the nerve to just pull the plug. Kill it quickly and move on.

Anonymous said...

"what should we do when we stop in pacifica next week? screw yelp, facebook, groupon and google, let me search for the chamber's website and download their app."

"even though cost of chamber membership has doubled and the biz directory is now the size of an amish phone book it still drives hordes of customers to my business."

"our budget was 70,000 dolaroos in the hole last year but the chamber can offer new businesses invaluable and trustworthy advice."

easy solution, do what so many others do...don't stop or shop in pacifica. do not stop.

Anonymous said...

Most people carry a phone that gives them much more convenient and accurate information than this silly directory. Why are people arguing about something as obsolete as buggy whips?

Anonymous said...

It's Pacifica, but you're absolutely right, that directory is not needed. Perfect symbolism.

***Actually I stand corrected. Looking at some old parcel maps in the area Palmetto was legally called at one time.

Old County Road coast route 2.
