PACIFICA, Calif. -- A
Pacifica police officer was
injured Friday when a man she had stopped for a traffic violation tried
to
escape in his car, dragging the officer about 10 feet.
The officer pulled 49-year-old Kieran McCarty over at
about 11:50 a.m. at state Highway 1 and Crespi Drive, police said.
McCarty was cooperative at first and was in the process
of being cited and released for driving on a suspended license when he
started
his car in an attempt to flee, according to police.
The officer reached into the vehicle to try to stop
McCarty from taking off, but McCarty accelerated.
The officer was dragged for about 10 feet before falling
onto the roadway, suffering moderate injuries, police said.
Other units pursued McCarty for about three miles until
his engine died. He was taken into custody without incident.
The officer has since been released from a hospital,
police said.
