I notice the city council member who came up with the goal setting idea, did not run for re-election.

The fate of Fresh & Easy is all about Fresh & Easy Corporate management, and their "goal setting". That article is currently in blog draft, and you'll see it later today or tomorrow.
Blaming city council for closure of Denny's and Fresh & Easy makes about as much sense as blaming council for climate change.
City Council did nothing when asked to intervene in the parking problems. All the beach goers and surfers would park in the Pedro Point Shopping Center to avoid paying parking fee.
Relax. 807 wakes up that way. Sucky. Somewhere else he's blaming Obama for all of it.

1037 Who asked them? You? I've always heard that neither the landlords nor merchants wanted official parking enforcement. Didn't want to pay for their part of making it work, feared a loss of good will and, yes, the loss of business from beachgoers. Who would know better than they? BTW, in this round, the new owners of F&E closed 50 stores. Some, and it's rumored this one was, were profitable on an individual basis.
Are surfers one of your pet peeves? They're a big part of our glorious beachy ambiance.
Agree that parking had nothing to do with either closure, but I wonder if the closures will cause beach parking revenue to decline as more free
spaces become available? Not to worry city council, because when paid beach parking proves to be a total dud, you've got your excuse.
Beach parking is not a dud. When Steve Rhodes was still City Mgr I know the revenues were higher than budgeted. I have not asked the new City Mgr about the current revenues but I do know people have been sited for not paying. KIMCO hired a full time security person to monitor parking at Linda Mar and he has told people to leave the lot when they arrive with surf boards. Saw him in action and he seems to hang out in the front of the lot by Safeway or Starbucks.
There were several times I tried to go to Fresh and Easy and gave up because there was no parking.
I doubt it was a major factor in their decision to leave, but it couldn't have helped.
I think we'd all like to see the current numbers on beach parking and how they were derived. Ha. Millions of city numbers I'd like to see. With no F&E there will be more free parking for beach goers. That's a fact. Let's hope for a really busy summer at the beach to offset any "drift" in parking revenue. And, new tenants, everywhere, lest we look ever more like a derelict town.
The goal of the paid parking was compliance with species and habitat protection and to offset the expense to the city to do so. Maintenance, rangers, enforcement, signs, fences, etc. Annual revenue in excess of annual costs stays with the beach for future use, improvements, equipment replacement, etc. Wouldn't have received the required permits for the parking program from the CCC, etc. without the plover protections. Pacifica chose to manage this state beach. Renewal of the agreement this year or next? The state performs and funds maintenance, enforcement and compliance duties on beaches it manages.
Thank heavens a lack of parking doesn't bother Safeway or we'd all starve.

Convenience, product quality and value, competitive cost, broad selection, and location are exactly the reason we shop at Safeway.
And in your ever-so-brief comment you failed to mention your idea of an alternative, which is probably out of town.

Where you take your business is of course your business, but if you think you're getting value and competitive cost at Safeway, you're wrong. Yes, you do have to go over the hill for better prices. For convenience it's nice to have the Linda Mar Safeway. It's location, location, location. But you can get the same produce for ONE-THIRD the cost at Pacific Markets. If you buy produce at Safeway, you are being gouged. Simple as that.

"1/3 the cost", competitively that's fine if you only buy produce. As for everything else, why not shop for your neighborhood at Costco? Think of all the money you'll all save!
Some of us also like to shop at Sun Valley and Oceana for various reasons, (probably the Farmer's market as well). Thankfully those small markets also exist-- no thanks to you of course. But, your view of the universe has just got to be the right one: "the same produce", and intuitive, distant knowledge of Linda Mar Safeway-- and all that.

Thanks Kathy for the link to Pacific Market. I tried the place once or twice. What a dump! I like a bargain as much as anyone but if that's the store the OP raved about, then I'll gladly pay Safeway prices and shop in a clean, pleasant store with friendly employees. I'm picky!
