San Mateo County Times/Aaron Kinney, 2/15/14. "Pacifica residents rally against Caltrans' plan to widen Highway 1."
24 NIMBIES protest highway widening, that's 24 in a city population of 38,189 |
"PACIFICA -- About two dozen
people gathered Saturday afternoon along Highway 1 to launch a campaign
against a Caltrans proposal to widen roughly 1.3 miles of the coastal
corridor. ... They hope to replicate the success of a
recent grass-roots movement that forced Caltrans to abandon a proposed
bypass around nearby Devils Slide in favor of a tunnel, which opened to
great fanfare last year.
The project -- which
Caltrans says would seek to reduce environmental impacts -- would widen
Highway 1 from Sharp Park Golf Course to Rockaway Beach from four to six
lanes. The goal is to ease traffic congestion during peak hours.
Caltrans estimates that unless the highway segment is widened, rush-hour
backups --some of which now exceed a mile -- will nearly double by
2035." Read article.

.... "Thousands of Pacificans are
trapped in this bottleneck every day. Emergency vehicles are delayed. A
small "Gang of No' group is desperate to monkey wrench everyone's
commute. The only solution is to add one lane in each direction to
facilitate turns out of the main north-south traffic. Anything else
means we all sit in our cars for more wasted hours. This improved road
will the same size as the existing Linda Mar-Hwy 1 intersection with one
more turn lane. Pedestrians get across very nicely right now."
.... "What other magic
'alternatives' are the opponents speculating about? Take the bus? Walk
to work? This project has been discussed and in planning for 30 years.
It's time to stop the delays and adopt the safety widening now."

By all means read the entire article and don't miss the comments that follow. There's a bit of regional humor from someone called American Hero. Priceless.
The same old gang of NO!!
Led by Peter Loeb!!
@2:31 I clicked on link to read article but did not see following comments. Where are they?
939 scroll down past the Cynthia Kaufman clip and the ad for Dr. Oz's Holy Grail of Weight Loss. Can't miss it. Nine comments now, all the usual blahblah, but American Hero's
is pretty special. Yes, I know we all love our Pacifica.
If Cynthia Kaufman and the rest of the hippie women and men got their hair done our economy would go through the roof.
304 Would they still be hippies? Duh. Of course they would. The next evolutionary step is Yippie (yuppie + hippie). We've got plenty. Some on council.
American Hero = Texas Buffoon
You are probably correct, but even a blind hog finds an acorn now and then. Here or there.
The Texas buffoon left town five years ago, his house was foreclosed on, and he has no stake in anything that happens here. As much as I disagree with the hippies, they have more say in this matter than Tex does
obviously these folks don't commute. I don't care what the state does to widen the highway. this should have been done 20 plus years ago when the k rail was installed.
By the looks of them at the Sunday protest, quite a few could use a hair brush and comb!
Ohmigosh. Some people who are opposed to the widening have unruly long hair. That shows that their position is foolish.
Long unruly hair. Hairy armpits. Who cares. It's the same group of people that have been stamping around for years yelling that the sky is falling. They're getting long in the tooth, and the hair a little more scargly, but the point is, it's the same message. No nothing, no where, no how! I don't even think half of them know what they are milling about protesting anymore.
I think the point is 454 that many of these folks are not in the main stream. They are on the fringe in their beliefs and appearance. Old hippies if you will. Many have said they think we should not widen the freeway because it promotes climate change. Many probably don't commute in cars out of Pacifica to a regular job everyday so they are out of touch with the reality of working families here.
It's vocal minority versus vocal minority, all of whom suffer the occasional bad hair day. No proof to the contrary exists.
Article updated 2/18/14 to include comments by Mark Stechbart supporting the Highway 1, fully studied, Caltrans 1.3 mile traffic solution.
