Highway 1 at Linda Mar closed from June 2014 to replace San Pedro bridge

Think you have a traffic delay now in south Pacifica? We fix.
Memo to Coastsiders:  spend money in Pacifica, or sit in traffic
The detour is from Highway 1 at Linda Mar Boulevard onto San Pedro Avenue (that funny frontage road which runs parallel to highway 1 along Pedro Point Shopping Center).  From June, 2014, highway 1 road closure with detour is expected to continue 1 year, 4 months.

Pacifica Tribune/Jane Northrop, 2/25/14.  "Highway traffic detour upsets Pedro Point residents."

"Pedro Point residents complained last Wednesday about the city's plan to detour Highway 1 traffic onto San Pedro Avenue starting in June and lasting until October 2015.

....  The construction will happen in two phases, the first one expected to begin in June and last until October. Phase one removes the existing bridge.  Construction resumes the following April to October 2015. The break occurs so the habitat for the wildlife in the creek will have an opportunity to flourish. The highway will remain closed through the break.

I attended this meeting and have to disagree with Jane Northrop's characterization that the San Pedro residents "complained."

The article would have been better served if it had opened with the fourth paragraph: Caltrans and city personnel hosted a meeting last Wednesday at the Pacifica Community Center to explain the project and to address concerns and answer questions.

Caltrans personnel gave an overview of the project and then opened it up for questions. Most of the questions concerned pedestrian safety along the frontage road which will serve approximately ten times the amount of vehicles as it does now.

Though I'm not a Pedro Point resident, I asked a few questions related to traffic flow in/out of the shopping center driveways and about any plans to repair the damage done to the frontage road after it's been used as a bypass/detour.

To describe what were straightforward questions as "complaining" is strange.

While I can empathize with the Pedro Point residents concerning possible ingress/egress issues during construction, the diversion of highway traffic onto the frontage road should not be a surprise to anyone. What other possible alternatives could there be other than dismantling and rebuilding one side of the old/new bridge at a time or abandoning the project completely.

No matter what problems might occur, we will all survive this project and likely be appreciative once it is completed.

I try to look at things in the positive venue so I was thinking that people may discover some new and exciting businesses located on the Point.

As a Moss Beach resident who travels ths strip of highway regularly, I feel the detour was not implemented as effectively it could have. There was, what appears to be, a head on collision in this detour that has stopped traffic entirely (June 21 11pm-June 22 12:30am). Since the detour went from approximately 4 lanes to 2, the road has been closed in both directions from this incident. This leaves residents heading to Half Moon Bay a familiar choice of waiting it out or head over 92. The "improvements" Caltrans continues to make to this strip of highway have confused me for half of the 26 years I've lived on the Coast. I really don't feel driver or resident safety is weighted nearly enough in these civil engineering endeavors.

According to the SFExaminer, a pedestrian was struck and seriously injured late Saturday night while crossing San Pedro Road NORTH of the Pedro Point Shopping Center. The driver from Montara was arrested under suspicion of DUI. While CALTRANS might be accused of poor road planning, this accident was more likely the result of an impaired driver rather than anything CALTRANS has done.

Impaired drivers and pedestrians after dark are never a good combo. Give the detour some time and it will account for its own share of vehicular mayhem.

A party at the fire house and full bar ended. Some wanted to party on to Cheers and jumped over the barricades, getting ready to run over the detour. Driver never saw her. Tragic.
