Police & FireUpdated: 15-Year-Old Cyclist Dies After Being Struck By Car
The boy was riding his bicycle without a helmet when he was struck.

By Camden Swita 25, 2011 About Patch A 15-year-old Pacifica boy who was struck by a motor vehicle on Palmetto Avenue Friday evening while riding his bicycle died Saturday, Pacifica police announced this morning.

Kijana Crossley, who was riding near the 100 block of the roadway a little after 5 p.m., was unresponsive when Pacifica police arrived at the scene of a reported car-bicycle collision. He was not wearing a helmet when the accident occurred.

Officers determined at the scene that he was not breathing, had no pulse and had suffered significant injuries. He was taken to San Francisco General Hospital where his condition was listed as grave before he passed away on Saturday, Pacifica Police Chief Jim Tasa said.

Crossley, a student at Oceana High School, died of massive head trauma, Pacifica Police Capt. Dave Bertini said.

The San Francisco Medical Examiner's Office released his name and age today.

Bertini said the preliminary investigation shows that the bicyclist may have been at fault in the accident.

Bertini said the driver and Crossley were both heading north on
Palmetto Avenue when the boy swerved in front of the car and was struck.

The driver of the car that struck the boy and a witness gave the same statement about the accident, police said. Investigators also spoke with two other people who arrived just after the accident occurred.

"If I could just get out to as many parents as possible to please, please, please make sure your children are wearing helmets," Capt. Bertini said. "This tragedy may have been avoided if the cyclist had been wearing a helmet."

The boy's parents were at San Francisco General Hospital when
their son passed away, Bertini said.
