From USA Today/Allison Sylte, KSDK-TV, St. Louis, MO, 5/23/15. "10 historical facts about Memorial Day."
A day to remember soldiers who gave their lives for America. |
Civil War: Approximately 620,000 Americans died. The Union lost almost 365,000 troops and the Confederacy about 260,000. More than half of these deaths were caused by disease.
World War I: 116,516 Americans died, more than half from disease.
World War II: 405,399 Americans died.
Korean War: 36,574 Americans died.
Vietnam Conflict: 58,220 Americans died. More than 47,000 Americans were killed in action and nearly 11,000 died of other causes.
Operation Desert Shield/Desert Storm: 148 U.S. battle deaths and 145 non-battle deaths.
Operation Iraqi Freedom: 4,422 U.S. service members died.
Operation New Dawn: 66 U.S. service members died.
Operation Enduring Freedom: 2,318 U.S. service members have died as of May."
And beyond these deaths, many more returning soldiers and their families have been permanently injured in so many ways.
Reference - History.com, includes videos. "Memorial Day, an American holiday observed on the last Monday of May, honors men and women who died while serving in the U.S. military. Originally known as Decoration Day, it originated in the years following the Civil War and became an official federal holiday in 1971. Many Americans observe Memorial Day by visiting cemeteries or memorials, holding family gatherings and participating in parades. Unofficially, at least, it marks the beginning of summer." US Memorial Day, from About. "This site was created in the fall of 1994 to be a central point of information about Memorial Day in the United States of America, help restore its original intent, and to provide others a chance to share their feelings, pride, respect, and honor for those that gave their all. .... Memorial Day started off as a somber day of remembrance; a day when Americans went to cemeteries and placed flags or flowers on the graves of our war dead. It was a day to remember ancestors, family members, and loved ones who gave the ultimate sacrifice. ... How do we honor the 1.8 million that gave their life for America since 1775? How do we thank them for their sacrifice? We believe Memorial Day is one day to remember."

The only 4 wars I can see even though they led to enormous loss of life are wars of aggression.
The Civil War. Well who knows if what would happen if our country was any more divided that it is is now.
WW1 The world is probably a safer place now but the problems and unsolved differences also lead to WW2
WW2 Again enormous loss of life but they had to stop the mad man over in Europe cause he was totally out of control.
Kuwait I can justify cause old man Bush did it right, He should have had Hussein taken out and that led to the cluster fart that his son caused.
May God Bless those who sacrificed their lives for our country.
May God bring the NEOCON War Criminals to justice.
May God bring Peace to this troubled world.
God Bless Our Solders.
May God stamp out Communism.
May God stamp out Fascism.
May God stamp out Socialism.
May God Help Us All for not recognizing all evil.
724, yeah, well you forgot to add Capitalism to that "evil" social/political systems list of governing. Problematic Capitalism examples: Average CEOs earning 331 x more money than workers.(Forbes.); or, banks fined for rigging financial markets in 2007, (Yahoo!); poverty and homelessness in America, ABC 7. Then there are all those environmental omissions or mistakes such as the recent Santa Barbara oil spill (Fox 6), etc.
Lucky you, Steve Sinai, Blogmaster, (who I believe works at being more fair than I do) did post this second, evolving, absolutist, (possibly fanatical) "God bless.." comment. Again, I did not. Your "god" will not save you from me, only Steve can do that.
724 You've wandered into the Sinai. That's biblical. You happy?
How ridiculously vain can you be.
Do you really think that the creator of the Universe gives a crap about the social/governmental systems we invent?
Deceptively starting wars for profit, now there's a Universal offense!
Bush, Cheney, Rice, Rumsfeld, Hitler, etc ................ will all rot in Hell for their criminality.
624 I sure hope so, but I'd really like to know why God waits? Because the idea that Hitler, Pol Pot, Stalin, the Hutu leaders, or our own Dick Cheney, will some day burn in hell for their truly monstrous deeds, is just not enough. Wish I had the kind of faith that makes it enough.
Greed is good
