Don Horsley breaks campaign promise not to double-dip as San Mateo County supervisor

Updated:   12/28/2012 03:18:44 PM PST

When Don Horsley was campaigning for the District 3 seat he now holds on the San Mateo County Board of Supervisors, he pledged to forgo the job's salary if elected, citing the county's economic struggles.

The former county sheriff still collected his annual pension, currently $215,000 according to his office.

This week, Horsley announced he is going back on his election vow, saying he now needs the $120,000 annual supervisor's salary more than the county.

The board vice president and his wife have begun paying for long-term medical care for her mother, according to a statement from Horsley's office.

"I did not take a salary for two years, but circumstances do change and they've changed significantly,"

Hey, glad to help, Don. Really, it's only money and your Pacifica
constituents are only too familiar with paying exorbitant salaries and phenomenal benefits to public servants. Our best to your mother-in-law.

This guy was supposed to be Pacificas savior.

What has he done for Pacifica?

Even though I supported Horsley and contributed money to his campaign, I find it very difficult to defend him on this.

Someone making over $300K/year shouldn't be trying to convince others that he's poor. It only generates resentment.

2 1/2 years of not taking salary. Did any other County Supervisor's do that?

The alternative Supervisor candidate for 3rd District was April Vargas, so the NIMBIES are still crying, but she did not win (thankfully).

And who were the prior County Supervisors who "saved Pacifica", Anonymous 8:19 AM? Your comment was the same on the related article, 12/27, 4:41 PM. What is it that you think County Supervisor Don Horsley or any other Supervisor should be doing for this city?

How many Pacifica PD are making $200-$300,000 with other pensions and all the benefits?

Savior? Like any of them, let alone Horsley, are capable of saving a town hellbent on its own destruction. The pledge served its political purpose and he feels it's no longer necessary to honor it. That $125K salary plus benefits (it includes yet another fat pension, doesn't it) were just too tempting. Don't you get it? Between him and his wife there was already plenty of money to pay grannie's bills. He just wants more...he wants us to pay. And we will.

Hey would a NIMBY have been cheaper? Pro-growth or Nimby, none of them do a damn thing worth their fat salaries and benefits. And once they're in that pension system they're bleeding us for life. Spare me the litany on 30 years of hippies and all the fantasy development blahblahblah...slap some real time real money price tags on these leeches.

We have our own greedy public servants right here in Pacifica and why not? Council has set a fine example on how to fleece a broke, dysfunctional city of every penny they can grab while claiming false economies, playing shellgames with pay and benefits, whining about short-staffing.
Useless, shameless bunch. Might as well let the county take over. At least we wouldn't have to run into them at the local Safeway, GITF etc. We'd still get fleeced but with less bullshit. A cleaner, more professional fleecing. Bring it on.

Let's just be grateful that the voters approved district elections for supervisors in this county. We are the last county in CA to approve district elections. Maybe a real independent like Ms. Vargas or someone else will have a better chance against the money machine. That one-party money and political machine is killing us.

I kinda liked her when I met her, but April Vargas is too much of a NIMBY for me to vote for her.

Steve, talk to her again. April doesn't think taxing the people of SMC is the way to fund things. She thinks there needs to be some roll backs and give backs that bring Sherrif salaries back in line with revenues rather than the TONY SORPANO like attitude of our current public sector. It lost her the support of the NIMBY class in her last bid.

Fiscal Conservative bray should be outraged.

President Barack Obama issued an executive order to end the pay freeze on federal employees, in effect giving some federal workers a raise. One federal worker now to receive a pay increase is Vice President Joe Biden.

According to disclosure forms, Biden made a cool $225,521 last year. After the pay increase, he'll now make $231,900 per year.

Members of Congress, from the House and Senate, also will receive a little bump, as their annual salary will go from $174,000 to 174,900. Leadership in Congress, including the speaker of the House, will likewise get an increase.

Here's the list of new wages, as attached to President Obama's executive order:

"A new executive order has been issued providing for a new pay schedule beginning 'on the first day of the first applicable pay period beginning after March 27, 2013,'" reports FedSmith.com. "The pay raise will generally be about 1/2 of 1%."

Jeryl Bier points to an example of the pay increase for average government executives

Bray speaking for & interpreting April Vargas is rich. Hey, how about getting Ms Vargas to post her own positions? Or maybe we could have Digre vectoring Bray speaking for Vargas...make you dyslexic...
