"On December 21, the 13th bak’tun – a vast 5,125-year cycle – closed in the Maya Long Count calendar, an event that has been likened by different groups to the end of days, the start of a new, more spiritual age or a good reason to hang out at old Maya temples across Mexico and Central America. Thousands of mystics, hippies and tourists celebrated on Friday as the Earth survived a day billed by doomsday theorists as the end of the world and a new era began for the Maya people. New Age dreamers, alternative lifestyle gurus and curious onlookers from around the world descended on the ruins of Maya cities to mark the close of the 13th bak’tun and many hoped it would lead to a better era for humanity."

A: Just as the calendar you have on your kitchen wall does not
cease to exist after December 31, the Mayan calendar does not cease to
exist on December 21, 2012. This date is the end of the Mayan long-count
period but then -- just as your calendar begins again on January 1 --
another long-count period begins for the Mayan calendar.

No where did the Mayan's say in the calendar that the world was going to come to an end. People mostly doomsday people made this up.
Its the same as our calendar ending on December 31st and the new one taking over.
But I read on the internet that it was the end of time. It must be true.

You think they lived around here? Maybe we have their ancestors right here on council. Direct descendants? End of the world on 12/21/12, balanced budget, economic growth, a real reserve, efficient WWTP, good government, RoundTable Pizza...this is classic stuff. I'm thinking it's Mayans we got at city hall.
See, this is why we get freebie calendars during the holidays. I got my usual one from Panfredii Plumbing in Syracuse so I know the world isn't going to end.
It's a good feeling.
