"No one knows for sure why Bay Area communities are becoming overrun with crows, but experts point to several factors: a mild climate, lack of predators, and abundant food and nesting sites that humans have provided for them.
Human development has fundamentally altered the regional landscape over the past half-century. Marsh and scrub have given way to suburban sprawl, much to the delight of crows, which prefer a mix of trees for nesting and grassy areas -- not to mention sidewalks and Dumpsters -- where they can search for food. With such an abundance of resources, crows need less territory to thrive, boosting population density.

with a nearly perfect arrangement of nesting and feeding habitat," says
John Marzluff, one of the world's leading experts on crows, in his 2005
