Even the cleanest wastewater contributes to more "Super Bacteria"

Last night (11/14/11) at city council some councilmembers discussed the forced sewer spill lawsuit, and how  unfair the conditions are.  One councilmember (Mayor pro tem DeJarnatt) went so far as to say the (1/08) sewage spill was clean, "there were no pathogens".  Think again.

From Science Daily, (11/14/11).  "A new University of Minnesota study reveals that treated municipal wastewater -- even wastewater treated by the highest-quality treatment technology -- can result in significant quantities of antibiotic-resistant bacteria, often referred to as "superbacteria," in surface waters.

The study also suggests that standard wastewater treatment technologies probably release far greater quantities of antibiotic-resistant genes used by bacteria, but this likely goes unnoticed because background levels of bacteria are normally much higher than in the water studied in this research."   Read more..

First "Sneaky Pete" said there was no sewage spill. It was all due to tar balls?

Thanks for this important information. The very day that treated waste water is used on Sharp Park golf course, samples will be collected for analysis to see if the public is in danger of this potential health hazard so that the appropriate remedies can be taken. Again, many thanks!

That's what happens when your sewer fees are used to build trails instead of maintain sewers.

Anon (11/15/9:47pm), the "super bug" science article is a new study. Probably the main thing is don't drink the water or eat any of the ground critters. The question of how the ground critters will be affected is outstanding.

would sneaky pete lie?

This is just random news right? Not what is happening at SPGC? CBD would have pictures of snakes and froggies floating in raw sewage on the course. Game over.
