Best overall Presidents rankings by
historians: #1 Lincoln, #2 Washington.
"Just weeks after leaving the White House, President Barack Obama ranks as the 12th best U.S. president overall in a new poll of historians conducted by C-SPAN ahead of Presidents Day.

It's the first time Obama was eligible for the Presidential Historians Survey, which asked 91 historians to rank all 43 former presidents across 10 categories. Those include "Pursued Equal Justice for All," in which Obama ranked 3rd, and "Relations with Congress," in which he ranked 39th.

Abraham Lincoln retained his top spot for the third time in the poll, which debuted in 2000 and last took place in 2009. Other consistently high-ranking presidents include George Washington, Franklin D. Roosevelt and Theodore Roosevelt, all of whom made the top five overall in each survey."  Read more, and view historians survey results.

I don't think Kathy will ever be able to reconcile the fact that if President Trump had been Pacifica City Councilmember Trump instead, she would fully support his candidacy and be extolling his virtues here on FP. LOL!!!

317, Trump's anti-social agenda, and alpha predatory psychopathic nature could never be "reconciled" by me. He's very "unusual".
Think anything good will come from this scary "con man" monster? I doubt it.

However, your point may be that balanced infrastructure development would be an economic, civic virtue in this City. If so, bravo you (not Trump)!

"C0n man/monster"? Your words, not over half the people in this country.

"Anything good"? We'll see. All I know is under Obama, STEM jobs were scarce if non existent as the H1B visa program is completely out of control and the economy plummeted; my retirement accounts (CD and savings)were earning less than one half of one percent interest which means I won't be able to retire; and ObamaCare cost me and my wife over $25,000 in premiums and high deductible/copays last year and I am not able to keep the plan I used to have as promised (many of my preferred doctors and hospitals are now "out of network" and the cost has more than doubled). So if Trump can fix just one of these things that the man whose qualifications before taking office consisted primarily of being a community organizer has broken, I will definitely say he has done "something good".

Kathy Meeh (learning from Trump U. ?) said...

802, more likely Trump would break anything that is fixed, (but we can hope for the best, FMV namely impeachment).

1. Politics, following the "It's Obama's fault" theory.
Obama's administration came in with "the worst recession since the great depression", and in the first 2 years the Affordability Care act (which initially occurred in spaced segments) was passed by Democrat controlled Congress.
Next 6 years Republicans gained control of Congress (through gerrymandering, placating low information constituency, etc.). The political strategy of that Republican controlled congress was mostly "NO!" and obstruct. (Congress generally legislates, the President proposes).
So, as you complain, think. The recovery under the Obama presidency, example, see fact Check, second quarter 7/11/16.

2. Personal.
a) Aging. Inflation and life happens. Many people delay retirement, unfortunately.
b) Investment. In planning for retirement, in a low interest economy, CDs and savings accounts aren't much of an investment strategy. Generally in a low or high interest economy, systematic investment in a balance of mutual funds through a reliable investment company is a better strategy, (the market goes up (fine), the market goes down (buying more shares at a lower cost).
c) Health insurance. cost goes up with age until age 65 (nothing new about that), then you may be eligible for medicare (assuming you're in the social security system).
At age 65, enroll in medicare, and purchase 1) a medical plan supplement, and 2) an Rx plan supplements; or purchase 3) an all-in-one advantage plan. Costs will be cut considerably.
Meantime under age 65, at the next Open Enrollment (effective 1/2018), find a medical plan that includes your "in network doctors and hospitals", they exist.

3. State of the economy. Doubt the H1B (3 year skill gap) visa program is responsible for a range of views of "plummeted economic" problems.
Some issues which might cause worker displacement: technology improvements, outmoded services, outmoded employees, USA business interests overseas, regional business location changes, foreign business partnerships, worker suitability, health, age or discrimination issues.

PS: Try Wikipedia and other reliable sources for past President Barack Obama's broad and brilliant background.

Thanks Kathy! Trying Wikipedia and other reliable sources as you so helpfully suggested, here is what I came up with regarding President Trump's accomplishments just 18.5 days into his Administration (I am sure that there has been much more since then):

So far President Trump has signed/issued these order, actions, memoranda:

•An order directing the Treasury secretary to review the 2010 Dodd-Frank financial regulatory law.

•A memorandum instructing the Labor Department to delay implementing an Obama rule requiring financial professionals who are giving advice on retirement, and who charge commissions, to put their client's interests first.
•An order instructing agencies that whenever they introduce a regulation, they must first abolish two others.

•A memorandum to restructure the National Security Council and the Homeland Security Council.

•A memorandum directing the Secretary of Defense to draw up a plan within 30 days to defeat ISIS.

•An order to lengthen the ban on administration officials working as lobbyists. There is now a 5 year-ban on officials becoming lobbyists after they leave government, and a lifetime ban on White House officials lobbying on behalf of a foreign government.

•An executive order imposing a 120-day suspension of the refugee program and a 90-day ban on travel to the U.S. from citizens of seven terror hot spots: Iraq, Iran, Syria, Libya, Yemen, Somalia and Sudan.

•Two multi-pronged orders on border security and immigration enforcement including: the authorization of a U.S.-Mexico border wall; the stripping of federal grant money to sanctuary cities; hiring 5,000 more Border Patrol agents; ending “catch-and-release” policies for illegal immigrants; and reinstating local and state immigration enforcement partnerships.

•A memorandum calling for a 30-day review of military readiness.

•Two orders reviving the Keystone XL pipeline and Dakota Access piplines. He also signed three other related orders that would: expedite the environmental permitting process for infrastructure projects related to the pipelines; direct the Commerce Department to streamline the manufacturing permitting process; and give the Commerce Department 180 days to maximize the use of U.S. steel in the pipeline.

•An order to reinstate the so-called "Mexico City Policy" – a ban on federal funds to international groups that perform abortions or lobby to legalize or promote abortion. The policy was instituted in 1984 by President Reagan, but has gone into and out of effect depending on the party in power in the White House.

•A notice that the U.S. will begin withdrawing from the Trans-Pacific Partnership trade deal. Trump called the order "a great thing for the American worker."

•An order imposing a hiring freeze for some federal government workers as a way to shrink the size of government. This excludes the military, as Trump noted at the signing.

•An order that directs federal agencies to ease the “regulatory burdens” of ObamaCare. It orders agencies to “waive, defer, grant exemptions from, or delay the implementation of any provision or requirement” of ObamaCare that imposes a “fiscal burden on any State or a cost, fee, tax, penalty, or regulatory burden on individuals, families, healthcare providers, health insurers, patients, recipients of healthcare services, purchasers of health insurance, or makers of medical devices, products, or medications.”

Don't you just love this truly GREAT leader!?!

"the man whose qualifications before taking office consisted primarily of being a community organizer" hahaha. The polar opposite of Trump, Obama was a professor of constitutional law at University of Chicago for 12 years, then was elected to the U.S. Senate.

@4:38-

From FactCheck.org (March 28, 2008):

Recently, Hillary Clinton’s campaign has picked up on this charge (i.e., that Barack Obama was not an actual professor of constitutional law). In a March 27 conference call with reporters, Clinton spokesman Phil Singer claimed:

Singer (March 27): Sen. Obama has often referred to himself as “a constitutional law professor” out on the campaign trail. He never held any such title. And I think anyone, if you ask anyone in academia the distinction between a professor who has tenure and an instructor that does not, you’ll find that there is … you’ll get quite an emotional response.

The campaign also sent out an e-mail quoting an Aug. 8, 2004, column in the Chicago Sun-Times that criticized Obama for calling himself a professor when, in fact, the University of Chicago faculty page listed him as “a senior lecturer (now on leave)." The Sun-Times said, "In academia, there is a vast difference between the two titles. Details matter." The Clinton campaign added that the difference between senior lecturers and professors is that "professors have tenure while lecturers do not."

5:26 You acknowledge that Obama was a senior lecturer at the University of Chicago and then was elected to the U.S. Senate. That makes the statement that "the man whose qualifications before taking office consisted primarily of being a community organizer" demonstrably false and therefore calls into question everything else you said.

BTW, the Clinton campaign didn't know jack about academia. There are many professors without tenure. They're called Assistant Professor or Associate Professor. However, in the case of Obama, the University of Chicago said that in fact he was a professor. In that same factcheck.org page is this UC Law School statement:

"From 1992 until his election to the U.S. Senate in 2004, Barack Obama served as a professor in the Law School. He was a Lecturer from 1992 to 1996. He was a Senior Lecturer from 1996 to 2004, during which time he taught three courses per year. Senior Lecturers are considered to be members of the Law School faculty and are regarded as professors, although not full-time or tenure-track. The title of Senior Lecturer is distinct from the title of Lecturer, which signifies adjunct status. Like Obama, each of the Law School’s Senior Lecturers have high-demand careers in politics or public service, which prevent full-time teaching. Several times during his 12 years as a professor in the Law School, Obama was invited to join the faculty in a full-time tenure-track position, but he declined."

Hardly anyone knew much about Obama in 2008. He was elected not by character yet the color of his skin. That is anti-Dr.Martin Luther King, he was an undercover Muslim, developed ISIS, never provided proof of citizenship. The Democrats lost a whopping 1,030 seats in the senate & congress between 2010-2016. Conservatives didn't riot of protest against Obama being elected President not that they liked him yet mainly due in fact that Conservatives are usually much more civil minded people. Why don't these Liberals just zip the lips for awhile, on second thought I like hearing Leftist whine about politics showing what mentally ill people they are.

Yes. What 5:41 said....

When somebody (@5:41) starts out by claiming that Obama "was an undercover Muslim, developed ISIS, never provided proof of citizenship", there's really no point in even having a conversation with them.
But I can't unread it, and it scares me to think that there might not be enough Republicans with the brains and the guts to help prevent Trump and his crooked cronies from carrying out their crazy, extreme and self-serving plans. God help us all!

Anonymous said...

10:06- I would bet the farm that there is nothing that one could say that is anti-Obama that you would be interested in having a conversation about. And not to worry. God has helped us. That's why Trump is now our President and Hillary is back in the kitchen "baking cookies".

It's OK, @8:50 - we get it. There's no need to keep proving how deep your thought process is.
Obama did a lot of things wrong, and if they'd been mentioned instead, I'd have agreed and maybe we could have had a rational discussion, but writing stuff about him that's just plain stupid won't cut it with people who don't watch only Fox news.
Obama did much, much more right (despite Republican's best efforts to stop him) than he did wrong, and he brought us back from the disasters that Dubya led us into. But now we have a President who makes Dubya look good - and who'd have thought that would ever happen?
Last night, Trump said that clean air and water were top priorities - just hours after he revoked an Obama order to prevent coal mines from dumping their slurry into rivers and streams.
Last night, Trump said that stopping the carnage and senseless killings was a top priority - just hours after he revoked an Obama order barring people with a history of mental health problems from buying guns.
Want to believe what you hear from Trump's mouth (or on Fox or Breitbart or wherever you get that fake news), or what he actually does?

I thought the $500 slippers the newly confirmed Commerce dude wore were very telling where this is going. Just be honest and flip the middle finger to the people you are supposed to represent.

Anonymous said...

11:15- You contradict yourself. It's impossible to have a "rational discussion" with the likes of you because you automatically discard any news/facts presented by major news sources like Fox News. Since the mainstream media has been in bed with the Obama Administration, it is next to impossible to get any news from them that makes Obama look bad. Why would they want to do that to the candidate they helped to elect for "being black"? You seem extremely naïve, best case, and totally dishonest, worst case.

So please, give me a few examples of these lies you claim we get from Fox News. I'm talking news, not analysis by partisan talking heads. You do know the difference, don't you? Now give me a few examples of lies from CNN, MSNBC, NBC, etc. Bet you can't, or more likely, won't. So again, why would I even try to have a "rational discussion" with the likes of you? Point made. Next...

Anonymous said...

@3:42 Unfortunately, I could give you many examples that you seem to be totally oblivious to - if I was bothered or wanted to waste time on you. But I'm not and I don't, so rant on and knock yourself out. Good luck.

Anonymous said...

Oh - and thanks for the laugh about Fox being a major news source! Good one! Hahaha!

Anonymous said...

@5:07 - Can't give me one example, can you? Thought so.

Anonymous said...

@5:16- While you are amusing yourself, perhaps you can get someone to read you this article on how Fox News is the most trusted national news channel: Fox News Most Trusted And, like the article says, it's not even close. Okay, you can go back now to amusing yourself...

Multiple studies have shown Fox viewers to be the least informed news consumers.

It looks like the term "lie" now means any statement one doesn't like, rather than a statement made by someone who knows that it's false. Fox treated Obama the same way other news organizations are now treating Trump.

I watch more Fox than I like to admit, not because I agree with it, but because it's entertaining. The only time Fox News ever had a good word for Obama was when Osama Bin Laden was killed, and even then it was faint praise. It wasn't just the talking heads on Fox like O'Reilly and Hannity who bashed Obama. Just about every political story was presented in a light meant to show Obama was an incompetent President. Benghazi, Obamacare, War on Christmas, The world is on fire, 40% real unemployment rate, blah, blah, blah.

Anonymous said...

Yes, well done relying on a study from an ex-Republican with an axe to grind. Go ahead and rely on him for all I care but here is a "prophetic" pre-election quote from this political genius (ref. http://economistsview.typepad.com/economistsview/2016/09/its-not-too-late-to-fix-fox-news.html):

"Now some conservative intellectuals ... are asking whether Fox is a net plus or minus for their movement. They wonder what good it accomplishes when it leads to the nominations of Republicans like Mr. Trump, who have a low chance of winning a general election...."

P.S. I expect this to be censored

Steve Sinai said...

9:29, why do you think Bartlett is an ex-Republican? He's a moderate Republican who worked for the Reagan Administration, and he's disappointed that there's no longer any intellectual tradition to the Republican Party.

Anonymous said...

8:35 What kind of alternative universe do you live in? Yeah, nothing happened in Benghazi; and with Obamacare, our insurance costs have gone down and we got to keep our previous healthcare plan if we liked it; the Obama legacy economy is perfect; oh, and true unemployment is at 5 percent - just like your reputable MSNBC, CNN, NBC,CBS... report it. Nice to see you quoting Bruce Bartlett whose goal is to "destroy the Republican Party" and in doing so, bring down Fox News.

Also, can you show me non hearsay evidence of where Fox News reported that true unemployment is at 40 percent?

Anonymous said...

Trump said on Fox News “somebody actually last week said we have a 40 percent unemployment."

Maria Bartiromo of Fox News says real unemployment rate is 40%

Donald Trump: Unemployment rate might very well be 40 percent

Anonymous said...

4:56- Since Maria B. has many years at CNBC and CNN prominently displayed on her resume, and since she is considered a highly credible market analyst (i.e., she is not a Fox News reporter) and was brought in to Fox Business Channel (again, not Fox News) to boost their non partisan financial cred, you can consider 40 percent to be an extremely reliable metric. In fact, you can take it to the bank. President Trump obviously did and so would I. But since that doesn't make your boy Obama look so good, I can see why you are desperately trying this lame attempt at misdirection.

Steve Sinai said...

Fox Business Channel is even more extreme than Fox News. Every day at 1 PM Fox Business takes over Fox News.
