City Council needs better solutions

Pacifica Tribune Letters to the Editor, 5/20/14.  "Listen to voters" by David Whitney

Mona Council is not listening
"Editor:  Pacifica City Council, May 12, all approve city manager's initial proposal to raid sewer fund to balance budget. With fines and repairs, etc. sewer fund will need more money, for sure.

Remember the cell phone tax 66 percent "no" vote. The council is desperate and doesn't know what to do. They sure don't listen to voters. Actually, nice, intelligent people who were elected because they care about Pacifica. Unfortunately, they are on different page than voters now.

Look at Beach Boulevard and $30 million library proposal. They now propose to cut libraries, Resource Center, visitor center and hope for economic development? All the money was spent on consultants and no results. Pacifica has a better future than with this council."

Good letter. We need to change the municipal code so the council cannot raise sewer taxes without a vote...instead of the current "50% of the rate payers petition". Sounds like a ballot initiative to me.

Covered under State Prop 218 and I'd guess that any change to how that works would take take a statewide ballot initiative. As that's unlikely, maybe we could make better use of the 50% rate payer protest provision to stop rate increases initiated by council to cover their looting of the sewer fund. Make sure voters know how the scam works and get those protest ballots filed. And at the first opportunity oust any councilmember who supports this scam.
