Taps for Fresh & Easy
--- unless someone buys them
It”s official. British supermarket chain Tesco is giving up on its 200 Fresh & Easy stores in the U.S., including 19 in the Bay Area.
Up to $3 billion in losses since launching the venture in 2007 was enough for Tesco to throw in the towel.
The company announced what most observers were expecting on Wednesday — and “exit” from the U.S. three months after it began a “strategic review” of its Fresh & Easy business. For a number of reasons — opening in the teeth of the Great Recession, fierce competition from U.S. players like Walmart, Trader Joe’s and Whole Foods Market – the small format, cashless checkout Fresh & Easy stores didn’t take hold.

A message to our customers
Posted on Wednesday, April 17, 2013
As many of you have heard or read today, our parent company Tesco updated on the future of Fresh & Easy. While we don’t yet know who our new owner will ultimately be, Tesco has already received interest from a number of parties including groups looking to purchase Fresh & Easy as an operating business. We appreciate all the support and love we’ve received from our loyal customers and even though our parent company plans to leave the US, we’re pleased to confirm there are no plans to close any portion of Fresh & Easy.

Best wishes to the local Fresh and Easy Team and just an FYI. I am in their rewards program, so they just sent out emails with regards to this development:

We're focused on continuing to bring you the same delicious, wholesome and affordable food you have come to expect from us. And rest assured, your favorite rewards program has a lot of exciting things in store for you including new Made For Me coupons launching next week, and some enhancements to our mobile apps that are coming soon.
We look forward to seeing you in the store on your next shopping trip. Keep an eye out for great new grilling products hitting shelves for summer and some innovative new promotions on some of your favorite fresh&easy products. We're also getting ready to re-launch our Shop for Schools fundraising program for local schools later in the summer with some exciting changes to make the program even more impactful.
Thank you for your support and let's keep fighting the good food fight!
Sincerely,
The fresh&easy Team"
Let's hope the business gets bought as suggested in the article. God knows Safeway has been a great place to go since F&E opened.
There is a dark side. In San Jose F&E is in a few neighborhoods that otherwise have no grocery stores beyond corner liquor stores.
Fingers- crossed, but expect that we will eventually have yet another vacant store front.

This radio commerical has been playing quite a bit over the last couple days.
Since Tesco said Fresh & Easy was under review sales have been up over 70%
Can we blame the NIMBYs yet for this failure, or did all the fat-asses in Pacifica go on a diet?
Yes, blame the local NIMBYs for Tesco selling all of its Fresh & Easy stores in the US. Also blame the City Council.
Maybe TJ's will buy them? Get into some areas/neighborhoods they skipped. Oh please oh please.
We can blame the nimby's and the nobbees and the way of thinking in Pacifica City Hall. It took them about 18 months to almost 2 years from finding this site to open.
We can also blame them for the hostile enviroment Pacifica has turned into for builders, developers and business owners.
I blame the North Koreans. 95% them and 5% on Assad of Syria. If you're nuclear, you've got a big edge.
Rantanon @ 12:22 you sure can but that would fly in the face of the truth. But then again flying in the face of truth is the only pilot's licenses given out to all my Rantanons, Dramanon and Redherringanons. Flap on my FM's, flap on!
Bray, you sound a little grumpy today.
Maybe you need to get out for some fresh air.
Yeah go ride a bike, get some fresh air and exercise.
I'll say it again, if all the hippies cut their hair and the women got dye jobs Pacifica businesses would be thriving.
@339 don't forget the manicures and pedicures...nails and hair...that's the full spectrum of business in Pacifica. Then you're ready to leave town for work, dining out, entertainment.
Make Pot legal in Pacifica. Oh wait they tried that before, never mind.
Bring in casino gambling. A bordello or two.
Vises are easy money. Ask Nevada!

wait wait I wanna hear more about those "vises" in Nevada from anon451. sounds kinky. who cares about groceries?
Bray's silly "rantanon" etc. nicknames are about as clever as his group of obstructionistas are at designing highways.
yeah, but at least he can spell, regardless of his other vices
727, Bray, an obstructionist! I bet you think that's an insult.
Now, that's insulting!
