San Mateo County Times - The Insider: Tea party fizzles on Election Day

The tea party movement had an impressive showing in San Mateo back in April, when several hundred people gathered outside Hillsdale Shopping Center to protest what they view as President Barack Obama's radical economic and health care policies.

But the turnout at the Tax Day rally didn't translate into success on Election Day. As the Times' John Horgan predicted June 2, there was no conservative uprising June 8 in the gubernatorial primary election.

Tea party-endorsed candidates for high-profile positions generally fared worse in San Mateo County than they did statewide, according to results compiled by the California secretary of state.

The Republican primary election to compete against Democratic Sen. Barbara Boxer in November makes for interesting study.

Former Hewlett-Packard CEO Carly Fiorina, who staked out a position well to the right of moderate Republican Tom Campbell, won the primary with 56.6 percent of the vote statewide. Campbell came in second with 21.3 percent, and tea party darling Chuck DeVore, a state Assemblyman from Irvine, placed third with 19.5 percent.

In San Mateo County, Campbell doubled his statewide average, pulling in 43.2 percent of the vote, meaning fewer votes for Fiorina, who tallied just 39.5 percent. DeVore received 15.4 percent.

In the conservative stronghold of Orange County, by contrast, Campbell got just 17.4 percent of the vote, while DeVore received 27.7 percent and Fiorina got 53.1 percent.

Now, to some extent, San Mateo County voters may have liked Campbell because they're familiar with him, even though the former congressman's roots are really further down the Peninsula in Santa Clara County. But are voters any less familiar with Fiorina, who made countless headlines during her six years at the head of Palo Alto-based HP?

Tea Bagger, here's where you should probably be posting your complaint. But, did you even read the article, not too bad for Tea Baggers, except locally-- unfortunately.

You claim to be a "conservative", and you understand the major city council economic leadership problem; so, if you're worth your words "conservative" (as in responsible with money) you would be part of the solution. Are you part of the solution in Pacifica? Or, are you just like some of the far-left and other myopic complainers, full of small, bitchy talk, and totally missing the "grown-up" conversation.

Who are you responding to Kathy? Who is doing the "bitchy talk" besides you? You, unfortunately have become very obnoxious on this Blog. I continue to read it and knowing that you are one of the ones who wanted this Blog to be successful to have positive change for Pacifica, I find it ironic that you continue to embarrass yourself with your unwholesome, derogative comments about those who disagree with you.

Its called a conversation Lois. I'm not embarrassed about what I've said. However my comments = "unwholesome" to you? Go figure, must be some kind of Tea Bagger logic.

Just trying to help "conservatives" who live here get focused. Got a cartoon for you, unfortunately not at my desk but on mobile so that will have to wait.

Do you really think "tea bagger" is helpful to get any one focused Kathy or helps in conversation. "Tea Bagger" is a derogatory term and as a lady, I would hope that you would stop using it to describe a person or people who disagree with you.

What I really find both amusing and hypocritical regarding Mr. and Mrs. Kathy Sinai, is that at the local level, with respect to Pacifica and its City Council, they are in effect advocating a "Tea Party" like movement. But once political party becomes a factor (as it does at the State and National levels), their ideological blinders come on. You can be certain that if Cal Hinton had run for Council as a Republican (which he is) Kathy and her husband would have voted for the other side. So transparent...

Lois, yikes, found that reference which was unexpected negative epithet reference. That comment as a slur was not intended on my part.

What reference then, Tea Bag party member? Sounds like more respect than I prefer to ascribe to what seems to be a variation on New McCarthyism. This country has been there before with the encouragement of extreme views and damage from what might be considered domestic terrorists and McCarthyism.

The problem with the Tea Bag movement I observe is that it is reactionary, ill-informed, anti-intellectual, raciest, hypocritical, gun toting, anti-government and a scary twist on what was the good name of "conservative". This Tea Bag movement is not the same as the William Buckley style intellectuals, who might also include current columnist commentators such as George Will and Charles Krauthammer.

Teabag Party Rally Photos. And, one illogical video example of many: At Teabag Party Rally a Veteran hates socialized medicine.

Ditto @10:31am,Duh @10:17am, and the other one @10:10am, what are you talking about? Local city council politics are "non-partisan", figure-it-out.

The issue in Pacifica is that a responsible economic plan for the city has not happen during the tenure of the existing city council. In fact, its clear they worked against that happening.

Cal Hinton (R), Barbara Carr (I), Maxine Gonsalves (D) supported balanced economic developing planning for the quarry redevelopment zone during Measure E (2002); Cal Hinton supported quarry redevelopment during Measure L (2006), if Barbara Carr was alive at that time so did she.

Responsible government is a non-partisan issue.Still confused, or do you just like to remain confused? Why don't you work to improve this city this year during the election season? Send an email to improvedeconomy@gmail.com.

As hard as it is to believe, the leader of the "Fix Pacifica" movement, Kathy Meeh, said the following:

"Lois, yikes, found that reference which was unexpected negative epithet reference. That comment as a slur was not intended on my part...

Good thing your usage of the epithet "Tea Bagger" was not intended as a "slur"!

Kathy Meeh said...

"Slurpee", your out-of-context, cognative errors are listed below:

1. Who would have known of the Teabagger ponographic reference. Tea Bag as in Boston Tea Party was my reference. Hence, not an intended "slur", clear enough at 10:42am.

2. No surprise you took a few words out of context. Comment @10:42am, went like this: "What reference then, Tea Bag party member? Sounds like more respect than I prefer to ascribe to what seems to be a variation on New McCarthyism. This country has been there before with the encouragement of extreme views and damage from what might be considered domestic terrorists and McCarthyism."

You removed "What reference then, Tea Bag party member?" Bad Slurpee!

3. The leader of the Fix Pacifica blog is Steve Sinai, Editor-in-Chief. Similar to you, I just visit, and sometimes have some fun at your expense.

Be sure you do some research outside of filling your head with Glen Beck entertainment.

Steve Sinai said...

I am not the editor-in-chief. That implies I actually edit something, when in fact, I don't.

Kathy Meeh said...

Steve, what would you say your relationship to the blog is? Technical Editor/Manager/Administrator?

You are the important guy that keep the blog functioning, and gives some style to the article postings. You also post, the same as everyone else. Again, this is a public blog, and people are responsible for their own comments, and are expected to behave somewhat like rational adults.

Occasionally you have offered an editor's note, or step-in to agree, to referee or advise.

This public blog generally favors a factual "fix Pacifica" moderate view, whereas extreme opinions, confrontation, and behavior outside the mainstream is not encouraged unless the commentary is an appropriate humor or sarcasm.

My comment above get a 1/2 right, you are the leader with technical expertise.

Steve Sinai said...

Technical Administrator sounds the most accurate. Or maybe blogmaster, circus ringleader, zoo keeper, cat herder.

Kathy Meeh said...

I vote for "zoo keeper".

Technical Administrator sounds good. I didn't think of blogmaster (an obvious title) until later.
