21st century library efforts continue

Pacifica Tribune/Letters to the Editor, 12/2/16. "Measure N support" by Ellen Ron, President, Pacifica Library Foundation

But NIMBIES thrive in this City???
"Dear Editor, I’m writing this letter to thank all the people who worked so hard to pass Measure N, to all the Pacificans who voted in favor of the measure and to the Tribune for its endorsement. Although it received a majority of yes votes, Measure N did not reach the two-thirds supermajority needed to build the new library.

So where do we go from here? The Pacifica Library Foundation will continue to advocate for a new library and to work with the city and county to move the project forward.

How can you help? Contact City Council members and remind them that a majority of voters want a 21st century library for Pacifica. Now, more than ever, we need a safe place where all are welcome, where knowledge can replace ignorance, and where Pacificans can come together as a community."

The JPA is in effect only while Pacifica works to establish a single library within a reasonable amount of time, and it only provides funding for a single library. Even that meagre funding will get cut off now that a bunch of FYGMs said NONONO to a new library and there won't be any library for anyone. Aaaaaaand the two physical sites will transfer back to the county because those were only given to Pacifica under this same JPA.

When Pacifica doesn't have ANY library or ownership of the two parcels, you can thank the same crew that lied Dierdre Martin into office for lying about sea level concerns at the library site, in direct contradiction to two independent sea level rise experts. Now they're over on Riptide whining about getting funding for schools. I should be used to this now, but truly, the stupidity of this crew is breathtaking.

@7:31 Almost nothing in your first paragraph is true. (That the JPA only provides funding for a single library is the only thing that is.)
The city owns the properties, but the JPA provides the content and the funding to operate.
Getting so many things wrong in one post does nothing to help the cause of getting a new library.

9:38, right back at you. The county owned the buildings before transferring them to Pacifica under the expectation of a One Library policy.

I suggest you have a look at the text of the JPA, read about the negotiations leading up to it, and review the history of the county board of supervisors on this matter before telling someone how wrong they are.

Hell, just go look at a Tribune from the late '70s or go speak with Margaret Goodale who was a member of the Friends of the Library back then and get back to all of us with what you've learned.

It is time to change JPA agreement and allow our two historic libraries to be preserved & updated. It is obvious that one library extravagance does not meet needs of all Pacifican's in barely 50% vote.Pacifica & County jumped the gun in paying for one library architecture plans prior to voters approval. It is obvious that people want two libraries to remain.

The Sanchez Library is decrepit, in disrepair, and is wholly inadequate to fill the requirements of a modern library. It was built in the '80s. There's not one thing "historic" about it.

Barely 50% vote... LMAO. Try 55%, but don't let the facts get in the way of a ripping good yarn, 12:06. I'll tell you what...you and the Stink Man can stock the fiction aisles of the new library when it's done. This constant lying and spin by the Library NONONOs tells you all to need to know about the moral fiber of the library opposition.

A majority of Pacificans have officially weighed in and they want a new library. The city has been given a mandate. Let that sink in. You're in the minority. Sorry if that harshes your buzz, but you're going to have to face the truth eventually.

Oh, by the way, there are plenty of other public funding sources that don't require a 66% threshold (or a public vote at all, for that matter).

Anonymous said...

Actually, the vote count was in the mid-50s.

This means that community support for a new, single library probably sits in the 65% range, because the vote was about a BOND to raise the construction $$$ and not about the library itself.

Most likely a fair number of people wanted a new library but didn't want to pay for it via a complicated property assessment which brought the vote total down to where it ended up.

Anonymous said...

I would welcome a new library but do not feel that I as a homeowner should have to pay for it!!! The city should foot the bill while not raising my taxes.

I wish that we could go back to where only property owners had the right to vote on bond issues. Renters should not have a vote to increase taxes for their benefit without having to pay for it!!

Anonymous said...

@ 2:12 How else but from our taxes do governments pay for anything? That's how it works.
And why do you think that renters don't pay taxes? If the landlord's property tax bill increases, you can bet that the rent goes up by more! It's indirect, but they still pay.
We need a new library, and we'd all pay for it, whether we rent or own.

Pacifica can not afford a expensive library.Pacifica needs rich County to take over library expense.Pacifica is frozen in time and does not want $33,000,000 monument.40,000 people who have computers and smart phones can get all the information they need at Starbucks along with great coffee and socializing.

Pacifica needs a lot of things and library project is low priority.Let's keep expenses down;plan for coastal emergencies.

1:01 pm -- please educate us simple folk on the "plenty of other public funding sources that don't require a 66% threshold (or a public vote at all, for that matter)" from which Pacifica could acquire funds -- not for a general purpose -- but for the SPECIFIC purpose of building a $33 million library. Thanks.

I guess all of us who had reservations or reasons to vote no on the library bond have no moral fiber. That tells me everything I need to know about the library supporters.

Anonymous said...

9:02 -- lease revenue bond is one example

Anonymous said...

city manager knows how to get it built without bond measure. she did it in walnut creek after their bond measure was defeated. probably why previous pacifica council hired her. of course this is a different council. wonder how long she'll hang around.

Try reading for comprehension next time and untwist those panties, 10:21. If you didn't have to concoct a lie in order to oppose the library, you're fine. On the other hand,f you had to make up a fib about an "underwater library," well...gtfo.

Kathy Meeh (all you know, may not be much) said...

1021, that's a pretty stupid comment on your part, but if that describes your version of "reservations" against funding a modern library building for our community, so be it.

Three forms of capital financing for the SPECIFIC purpose of building a $33 million library that don't require a public vote. You're welcome.

1. Certificates of Participation

2. Lease Revenue Bond

3. Revenue Backed Bond (probably not feasible in the case of a library)

Half Moon Bay is building their library without a bond measure too.

Opponents will lie their asses off, but the numbers are there for all to see. The majority of Pacificans want a single, modern library instead of two moldering shacks.

Pacifica has spoken and a new library is going to happen.

Libraries have always been and always will be centers of information, communication and social stability. Since it is not an institution of anonymity, libraries help to blend widely varying opinions without polariztion, suppression or demonization.
This would be the worst possible outcome for the NOBY's who depend on low information, easy provocation and a divided community to pull off the stunts that they have become so good at orchestrating. Our most recent city council election is a perfect example of how they operate and will continue to do so for generations to come. They accost and shame people with their phoney moral superiorty on issues such as low cost housing, protecting habitats and saving beaches while at the same time these extremely selfish hypocrits have no compunction about manipulating an election in order to install an illegitimte council person who will do their bidding.
Wake up Pacifica.

Anonymous said...

Opponents of the library bond "will lie their asses off." Yeah, and supporters are morally superior.

Anonymous said...

Half Moon Bay got millions from County after big library bond defeat.Pacifica as usual gets peanuts.Wake up and demand the county pay up poor Pacifica.

Anonymous said...

Library bond got on ballot and was defeated! Maybe supporters should demand recount like all other losers are doing.Pacifica voted two ballot measures down and that tells you what you are going against!

I can see that 9:16 is upset that the NONONOs are getting called out as being bullshit peddlers. The next time an issue like this comes up, perhaps you can avoid getting mud all over yourself by supporting your position with facts instead of fiction.

So yeah, I'm going to say the supporters of a new library occupy the higher moral ground here. They didn't have to lie about Sanchez being a "historic" library or that the proposed new site floods which means that the residents of West Sharp Park have been unwittingly slogging through floodwaters all this time.

Despite all your tinfoil hat theories, a majority of Pacificans still want a library in the proposed location. Full stop. Why are you spazzing out about this? Allergic to facts, maybe?

Anonymous said...

Half Moon Bay stepped up and the county responded in kind.
The county also made that promise to Pacifica but as you know we love to kick ourselves in the balls.

Anonymous said...

NONONO Nothings like 916 find no moral differences between those who had expert reports and library usage studies to back up their positions versus those who just knowingly made stuff up.

Anonymous said...

Pacifica won't be getting any county $ for anything after the NOBIES voted out the only councilperson who was fighting for our share. Instead they wanted people who would fight against the county because they love potholes and hate bew sidewalks.

I'M NOT VOTING FOR ANYTHING NEW UNTIL THESE POTHOLES GET FIXED!!!

*votes out councilmember who sits on SMC Transportation Authority board*
*smokes bowl*
*votes out councilmember who sits on ABAG board*
*eats pot brownie*
*votes out councilmember who chairs C/CAG*
*rolls joint*
*scratches tiny head and wonders why Pacifica can't get any money from county*
*renews medical marijuana card*
*turns on Judge Judy*

I voted for the library bond. I like libraries. And oh how I love it when the Morals Police are on the job. Everything is assigned a moral value--from dog food to bond measures. Buy a certain brand, vote a certain way and your morals are superior. And so are you! Projectile vomiting.

Go Go Go. Deirdre, Keener and Digre. Fire Tinfow, recind all promises to reinforce the coastline, kill that highway, bury the Library, make Palmetto business district a leash free dog poop zone, chase out would be developers of the old waste water treatment plant, give the quarry to GGNRA, etc.
Bring back the race to the bottom and finish the job of completely fucking over Pacifica once and for all.
Don't forget to lick the asses of the "I got mines, screw everybody else".

$33,000,000 library was a cost shift to homeowners from Pacifica Council which really does not want to support library costs. It wants to sell current library sites and use money for "better use"

Anonymous said...

And oh how I love it when the Morals Police are on the job. Everything is assigned a moral value--from dog food to bond measures.

Yeah, it really makes you think, maaaaaaan.

Cuz like...if morality is just a societal construct...telling a bunch of lies isn't wrong, so who are you to judge, right? Lies...facts...who cares cuz we're all gonna be equally dead in the end.

Wow. Yeah. Pass me the bong.

Anonymous said...

Moral values shouldn't be assigned to people who post made up stories online and blatantly lie to peoples' faces to get what it is they want. LMFAO. Okay, whatever, 11:52. Sounds like a real successful and fulfilling outlook on life. Have fun!

Keener voted against the construction of a short sidewalk. Let that sink in for a while.

If Keener and the Three NOmigos don't want a freaking sidewalk built in Pacifica, what chance does a project of any consequence have?

(answer: negative infinity)

Anonymous said...

I think you're wrong.
The Three NO-migos lie in bed awake at night worrying about the homeless.
Surely they would pass a project with affordable housing built into it.
Right?

Anonymous said...

The Three NOmigos helping the homeless?! You'd have to actually BUILD structures of some sort in Pacifica, so no, sorry, that puts an end to it all right there. Oh, and even if they were somehow housed/working, the former-homeless would probably end up owning and driving their own cars and adding to traffic so, I really am so very sorry, but you have to see how impossible this situation is.

In any event, everything west of the Sierra-Nevada is going to end up underwater in a decade anyway according to the clear-thinking NextDoor No-Nothings.
