Another Wild Equity/Brent Plater lawsuit we're paying for. Yes, this plant does look like a Manzanita, no doubt about it. Worth suing the Federal Government because this variety is not listed on the Endangered Species List?
Mercury News 5/15/11. SAN
FRANCISCO—An environmental group has filed a lawsuit accusing federal
officials of failing to protect a San Francisco native plant that was
rediscovered near the Golden Gate Bridge two years ago after it was
believed for decades to be extinct.
The Wild Equity Institute
filed the lawsuit on Tuesday. The group criticizes the Department of
Interior and U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service for not listing the
Franciscan Manzanita under the Endangered Species Act since its
rediscovery in 2009.
Institute Executive Director Brent Plater tells the San Francisco Chronicle the plant needs the act's protection to recover.
U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service spokeswoman Sarah Swenty said she could not comment on pending litigation. But federal officials are currently reviewing the plant's candidacy.
Before its discovery two years ago, the plant had not been seen in the wild since the 1940s.

These guys are the equivalent of environmental ambulance chasers. By suing government (Federal, State or Local), these lawyers can get all of their billable hours on the case reimbursed by the Federal Government (taxpayers) under EAJA and other legislation.
Sure they only make about $125/hour under the reimbursement guidelines - not much as far as lawyers go - but pretty darn good for environmental activists. The whole "Big Year" BS is used to find more "leads" ("endangered species") so they can gin up more lawsuits and more reimbursements. It is an abuse of the process, the law and the judicial system.
There is zero Federal oversight and accountability on where, who, and how much of our money is spent on this nonsense.
It also has the effect that organizations such as the Dept of Fish and Wildlife lose the ability to make independent judgements about how and where their (our) budget can be used most effectively to protect wildlife and endangered species. The WEBLEEDU's (Wild Equitable Biodividerse Litigators for Environmental Extortion and Deep Untruths) effectively make that decision for them and us in the courts. It's a mess.
Jeez, taxpayers already spent $175,000 to move the plants away from Doyle Drive.
Plater and his crew showing their true colors again. Does anyone really think they care about these issues or just the money they can collect?
I say the money and the money only.
