Change is coming - how will the shift to local authority and funding impact San Mateo County and Pacifica?
Comments by Governor Jerry Brown extracted from
Mercury
News 1/5/11. "We're going to shift funding to the local
level"....Brown told reporters after the meeting. "This will be
a complex undertaking to realign jobs, whether foster care, welfare, food stamps or redevelopment.
We're going to try to redistribute power in a way that's closest to the people
that makes sense. .... a mixture of legislative actions and ballot measures
will be required over the next weeks and months to complete a realignment
plan...hard political negotiations among often competing interests
will be the key...."
"Counties and cities use redevelopment agencies to funnel property taxes toward rehabilitating commercial strips, building affordable housing, and boosting local businesses and tourism. Eliminating them would free up billions of dollars to solve the state's deficit, and would presumably be a part of the revenues returned to local governments for other services......we do meet certain basic standards.... What standard does the state guarantee, and what authority and discretion do we leave with local school districts, or local counties?" See the full article for more detail and the specific context.
Sworn into office, 1/3/11: "...without any mental reservation."

Stop Subsidizing Ballparks and so-called blighted downtowns is a good start.
Ball Parks cost alot of money but bring in a ton of money
Look at the area around ATT park it was a waste land before the ball park went in
They also create jobs
AT&T was not built with tax payers money. Tax Payers did not subisdize the AT&T BallPark. Just ask former Mayor Willie Brown. It is a great story.
We can build, and have for centuries, without tax payers subsidizing the project. Or were you born yesterday????? and no longer remember those days. But, of course, this is no longer the Golden State of California. More like Red China.
"Ball Parks cost a lot of money but bring in a ton of money." This makes sense Jim Alex, as does developing and promoting assets of a community.
"Is the cup half full or half empty", Anon? Fortunately China has loaned us money during this corporate financial failure (the result of inadequate "government" regulation and private sector non-compliance) - I "red" that.
California is still the world's 8th largest economy.
And, Anon please describe further your comment regarding former San Francisco Mayor Willie Brown. If its such a good story why are you keeping it to yourself?
That is why I think Jack London Square is an excellent place for the new A's stadium. Oakland needs something to jump start the local economy
Jim A., Its been years since I've been to Jack London Square. Can't remember, is there land in back of that area? I'm assuming you don't mean tear down the shops and restaurants, and do keep the small boat dock.
When you get off bart Jack London Square is right in front of you a couple blocks down the street. Fridays was in the right corner and they put in a couole condo buildings that sold out pretty quick. There is port land to the east of Jack London Square that Oakland is talking about.
The current stadium is old and was changed over for football. The NFL wants new stadiums for every team and SF Oakland and SD are the only teams with old 60's era stadiums.
No leave everything that is there already and the stadium would be east of the current shops and restaurants.
