No kidding. The electricity went out right in the middle of the USA-Canada hockey game. I felt like shoving a hockey stick up the behind of PG&E's CEO.
Power outages hit Peninsula, Bay Bridge and San Francisco Bay City News Posted: 02/22/2010 06:58:17 AM PST Updated: 02/22/2010 06:58:17 AM PST
After restoring power to thousands of customers along the Peninsula following an outage Sunday evening, PG&E crews last night were working to fix another outage in San Francisco that briefly knocked out lights on the Bay Bridge, a utility spokesman said.
Shortly before 6 p.m., an outage caused by a downed transmission line was reported near San Bruno and was affecting about 10,000 customers, PG&E spokesman J.D. Guidi said.
Power was restored to all customers in the area by 6:55 p.m., Guidi said.
Another outage was reported at about 6:20 p.m. in San Francisco's South of Market District, he said.
A smoking manhole was reported at the intersection of Second and Harrison streets and originally knocked out power to more than 1,300 customers, according to Guidi.
The outage briefly knocked out lights on the Bay Bridge, Guidi said.
The lack of lights did not affect traffic on the bridge or marine vessels in the water below, but San Francisco International Airport and Oakland International Airport officials were notified that the warning lights on the bridge were out, California Highway Patrol Officer Ralph Caggiano said.
All lights on the bridge were restored by 8:45 p.m., Caggiano said.
About 340 PG&E customers in San Francisco remained without power as of 8:45 p.m.
PG&E investigators are looking into what caused the smoking manhole, he said.
While Fix Pacifica is busy doing that hard hitting investigative reporting on hockey games, it looks like Jeff's Big Mouth is still trying to "fix Pacifica". Good piece today on the old sewage treatment plant site. Check it out: http://jeffsbigmouth.blogspot.com
While Fix Pacifica is reporting on hockey games, it looks like Jeff's Big Mouth is...hey, wait a minute, he's commenting on sports, whining about the absence of news, posting pictures of panties, and complaining that someone else's apology wasn't good enough (perhaps that's why he never apologizes, just waiting to find the perfect way to do it?).
Maybe that's what Still wants means by putting "fix Pacifica" in quotes.
Lets face it boys and girls, the charged up energy which drew so many of us to this blog, is gone bye bye. Gee, I wonder why? Thanks for hanging in there, Kathy.
Maybe now we can finally have some adult discussion on ways to improve the city, rather than getting dragged down into childish pissing matches and personal vendettas.
Hi Lois, continuing with the logic of your equation: intelligence and truth = win, win.
We've had a lot of both intelligent and truthful people who work to improvement in this city but without city leadership change directional improvement will not happen.
On his Editor's note (Calera Parkway meeting announcement 3/3/10) the paraphrased comments described by Steve are real. We must show-up and participate, otherwise more of the same and the continued voices of "nothing for Pacifica" prevail.
If there is only a hand full of people that are willing to do the hard work of showing up and participating, yes, the ones in charge now will continue to be in charge. How long have we been at this, Kathy? I see a few new names showing up on this Blog, but are they participating?
Election year people who want change for an economically sustainable city will join. I've been around a while along with others, and to my delight you continue to support all of us improving and changing the dialog periodically.
One of the main problems we've had over the last several years is that our public face has been represented by tantrum-throwing, big-mouthed clowns. That appeals to a small group in town, but it makes it hard to get most others to take us seriously.
We've had good results in the last year regarding Measure D, the Houmam's project on Palmetto, and the golf course. Among the group of people coordinating opposition to Measure D, there was a conscious attempt to keep certain clowns with a history of failure away from the campaign. Given the results, it was a good idea.
Residents can see what kinds of economic problems the no-growth contingent have caused for the town. Pete DeJarnatt would have lost his seat on council if not for the actions of one of our clowns. We shot ourselves in the foot on that one.
Until we offer more than insults, tantrums, conspiracy theories, and erratic behavior, we'll have a hard time generating the credibility we need to convince mainstream voters to change the way the city's been run over the last eight or nine years.
When will you stop holding people to double standards, Lois? When have you ever criticized Jeff or Tod for insulting people, which seem to be all they do?
I'm sick of the way they've undercut our efforts over the last few years.
Steve not my view, the "clowns" are city council 4, not people we know who have been careful with information and have been working for years for a better city.
Isn't it rich? Are we a pair? Me here at last on the ground, You in mid-air.. Where are the clowns?
Isn't it bliss? Don't you approve? One who keeps tearing around, One who can't move... Where are the clowns? There ought to be clowns.
Just when I'd stopped opening doors, Finally knowing the one that I wanted was yours. Making my entrance again with my usual flair Sure of my lines... No one is there.
Don't you love farce? My fault, I fear. I thought that you'd want what I want... Sorry, my dear! But where are the clowns Send in the clowns Don't bother, they're here.
Isn't it rich? Isn't it queer? Losing my timing this late in my career. But where are the clowns? There ought to be clowns... Well, maybe next year.
We would be better off with what you consider "clowns", Steve.
As someone who would love to see the city embrace progress and as someone who is very disappointed in the current council, as usual I can't agree with you more, Steve.
Having our local Glenn Becks hysterically demonize their opponents (frequently on a very personal and off-putting level) does not help the cause. Most of us are adults who can disagree and still be reasonable. I think that painting everyone who disagrees with you with the "bad guy" brush is very childish, and is a sickness that infects our government at all levels.
I recognize that most of the people on Riptide are trying to do what they think is best for the community. Unfortunately, in my opinion they are also utterly wrong in almost all cases, but that doesn't make them bad people -- it's just an opportunity to educate them.
Steve and Scotty, agreed. I'm reminded of a jury trial where the facts came down to he-said/she-said, and the prosecutor was a jerk. Guess how the jury went on that one...
Now, back to the business at hand, has anyone managed to lay hands on one of the union contracts so we can see whether Lionel's concerns are justified?
Right Scotty, the Agenda is almost complete in Pacifica (the economic final solution), now educate them.
The relationship of Glenn Beck to fact, has more to do with the relationship of City Council to "our economy is our environment", than it has to us expressing our disappointment of city council through fact.
Power outage correction for the record, from the Tribune 2/24/10 front page (Jane Northrop): "in all 27,700 customers lost power at 5:58 pm when a PG&E transmission wire in the South San Francisco yard broke. Power was restored to all customers within an hour. Crews worked through the night to repair the transmission wire and complete their work by 8 am."
And, stated as unrelated was the San Francisco power outage which affected 1,300 PG&E customers and briefly turned-off the western span of the Bay Bridge.
Shows you how fluid information can be when initially reported. Just following the event, in a blurb from TV 2/21 think I heard "2,700 customers in Pacifica lost power". Next morning, Anonymous 2/22 reported Bay City News: "affecting about 10,000 customers, PG&E spokesman J.D. Guidi said."
Think we'll settle on Jane's report, and going back to the Pacifica Media panel (2/22, and article on this blog), slower moving weekly newspapers (with greater time to consider, correct and deliver information) are potentially important in the total information delivery system-- even in a community newspaper which attempts to some extent to balance city interests and views.
Kathy, I agree with most of your comments. I especially thought your comment to Scotty re educating the NO PROGRESS crowd is right on. No doubt the no progress bunch believes that all of us wanting changes to better Pacifica, need to be educated. It is after all, just a mellow sleepy community which has all thats needed. I want to thank you for your persistence in getting the word out. Hopefully, it will help people make a better choice in the coming elections.
It's ironic that Jeff promotes that video so much because it's completely emblematic of Jeff to me -- excellent ideas with which I completely agree that are marred by very poor presentation.
Scotty Snotty...just what is poor about Jeff's the presentation or the point he made about "our economy is our environment"-- as if you all mighty one could do better. How about posting some articles, or doing something other than snippy commentary to show us how great you are at conciliatory thinking, presenting researched facts and why these don't matter, missed city opportunities and how that's worked-out for the benefit or our citizens during the past 8 years? And as a result, city potential in 1) continuing to do nothing vs. 2) economic improvement. Looking forward to hearing from you: "Credit where credit is due". These are your words.
I love that video! Its so right on. I don't know the circumstances re the fallout between Steve & Jeff, but in my view all the posts and comments put up by Jeff may have been comical, but always packed a nice punch to expose and reveal the inadequacies and hypocricies that epitomizes the lack of progress in this town, for the past decade. Besides, we can all use some comical relief. Garbage Can Thief, please don't take the video.
"How about posting some articles, or doing something other than snippy commentary to show us how great you are at conciliatory thinking..."
If you are going to criticize commentary for being 'snippy', it's best not to be snippy about it.
Sometimes I agree with Scotty, sometimes I don't, but I always feel that he is saying what he really feels, without any personal agenda or ax to grind. In my humble opinion, Fix Pacifica needs more of that, not less.
As for Jeff's video, he deserted this site, "stole" his posts and burned his bridges, it's time to get his face off of the home page.
Anyway, in spite of it's prominent position the video has only gotten 320 views, so it's not having much of an effect. If you need a replacement, I'll be happy to provide one.
Good articles about the City Attorney, the old Wastewater Treatment Plant and much more... And yes, his infamous video will continue to be featured on his blog.
The only Wavelength show that was edited for content was the Peter Baye show.
Wavelength is 28:30 long, and the Swaim presentation was 40 minutes, so I used the last 28:30 uncut, which seemed like the most fair approach. (If I had cut out the end or the middle the conspiracy theorists would have had a field day!) Anyway, the first 10 minutes was without a tripod and pretty shaky, so you aren't missing much.
Good point Ian, best to not be snippy in commenting on the snippiness of others-- the same waste-of-time comment cycle people get stuck-in, and Scotty and I have been there prior.
For me style of expression is not an important issue, whereas the message is. I believe both Scotty and Steve would argue both must exist in "acceptable" form to have an effective delivery of information.
I believe Jeff's video commentary on "our environment is our economy" should stand for now, since it describes the existing economic deficiency in Pacifica, and as mentioned by Markus its funny.

No kidding. The electricity went out right in the middle of the USA-Canada hockey game. I felt like shoving a hockey stick up the behind of PG&E's CEO.
According to the news Pacifica lost a transformer, and I think they said 2,700 homes were affected.
Pretty exciting hockey game, US defeated Canada 5-3.
That's one influential transformer... If so, must be one of the really big ones.
Vreeland must have been rooting for the Canadians! </snark>

Still wants to fix Pacifica, really? Attacking a source that's part of the solution doesn't indicate anything other than anger management is needed.

Any chance of changing the thumbnail for the campaign video that's on every page?
(blogspot humor: the captcha presented for this particular post was "diesore")
Anonymous, are you talking about the video of Jeff and Mori Point?
I believe that's what he/she/it means.
It's ironic that Jeff promotes that video so much because it's completely emblematic of Jeff to me -- excellent ideas with which I completely agree that are marred by very poor presentation.

Since he took all his posts down, why not the video?
Nice name-calling, by the way.
Well deserved Anonymous or Scotty, "excellent ideas marred by very poor presentation". Really? Then its your turn to do better.
My guess is Jeff simply forgot to take down the video.
I'm inclined to leave it up unless lots of people tell me they want it down, or Jeff tells me he wants it down.
Take down the video and I return Kathy's garbage can unharmed!!!!!

Ian I would love for you to post "unedited" footage of Karen Swaim's presentation at our city hall in December.
For those of you who still care, Jeff continues to post the inconvenient truth on his blog: http://jeffsbigmouth.blogspot.com
