Fix Pacifica wins the debate!!

Oops, sorry. I was channeling Brent Plater there for a moment. There was no debate.

But four local media blowhards did get together on Ian Butler's Wavelength show to discuss the state of local Pacifica media.  The discussion will be shown Monday, Feb. 15 Feb 22, at 6:30 PM on Channel 26, Pacifica Community Television. (For those without cable, you can try watching on the web at PCT26. Their video streaming has lately been a bit problematic, though.)

Participating blowhards include John Maybury of Riptide, Jane Northrop from the Pacifica Tribune, Marty Anaya of Pacifica Community Television, and Steve Sinai from Fix Pacifica. Your host is Ian Butler.

Pass.

Whatever happened to Jeff's Best?

I tuned in at 6:30 to check out Sinai, but all I got was an airing of the Swaim report. What gives?

I've got to hand it to Ian -- at least he aired a scientific study that was 100% opposed to him and Plater. Maybury seems to prefer pretending it does not exist.

I'm sure the two-dozen viewers who tuned in were very disappointed.

Two dozen? Don't flatter yourself. How the hell did this guy Butler ever get selected to do a debate show or any type of talk show for that matter? Too bad because the idea might have made a touchdown, but you definitely got the wrong ball carrier on this one. Ian Butler is one lousy host and the biggest bore going. Isn't he the same guy who cuts trees for a living? If so, attempting to host a talk show is really "barking up the wrong tree" for this creep. Caught his act once and that was enough. Somebody been's lying big time to this "wannabe". As for the rest of them, who knows, but more importantly who the hell cares? Sorry guys, but don't quit your day jobs, while you still have them. You know what I mean? And, yeah, I'd also like to see Jeff's Best instead of Butler's Worst. When they get better programming on 26, let us know, but until then don't bother promoting this crap.

My apologies to anyone who tried to see the show last week, the station is mostly run by volunteers and things don't always go according to plan. Hopefully you enjoyed the Karen Swaim repeat.

The correct show should play tomorrow (and the following Monday as well) at 6:30 PM. It was informative to anyone interested in local media issues.

Thanks to Steve Sinai for representing FixPacifica. I hope you all appreciate all the work he does he does running this site and getting the word out.

Congratulations Ian (Program Moderator), and all who participated in the Pacifica Media panel-- including John Maybury (Managing Editor, Riptide- monitored blog), Jane Northrop (Staff Editor, Tribune Newspaper), Marty Anaya (General Manager, Television Station PCT26), and Steve Sinai (Managing Editor, Fix Pacifica - not monitored blog). Ian also included a separate videoed interview with Elaine Larsen, (Managing Editor, Tribune Newspaper). The titles ascribed above are mine as understood, the program was more casual, John, Jane, Steve, Elaine each described as Editor, Marty described as Manager.

The program was informative, and Ian accommodating and friendly, well done. Steve was evenhanded and firm in support of the need for an alternative view to Riptide, this not- moderated blog. Example, support of the golf course, vs. little to none from Riptide (although John said he, himself is for mixed-use which was not further defined on the program).

Surprising to me was that Daly City with a population of 100,000 has no television station or news paper (Ian). Shocking to me was that that Tribune subscribers has dropped from the high at 8000 to the current low of 3000 (Jane).

Jane also pointed-out media supports each other with different function, example blogs are immediate whereas the Tribune publishes weekly. Financially thanks to advertisers the Tribune survives. Marty mentioned community TV funding through Cable companies is current more sparse: existent here, nonexistent in many other cities.

Funding comments also noted: John said even with paid advertising and donations Riptide has no profit, Steve acknowledged Fix Pacifica accepts no paid advertising or contributions.

Thanks for the recap, Kathy.

One important clarification, Elaine told me that the Tribune subscribers now total 5,000, not 3,000 as Jane had said. (3,000 is how many subscribers they lost.) That's still a precipitous drop, but the paper and it's ownership are in reasonably good financial shape. Media continues to evolve, but there is still no replacing a local newspaper, we are fortunate to have one!

You're right Ian, 5,000 sounds better than 3,000. Think we need to do what we can to encourage people to subscribe, because there is no real substitute for the Tribune (our needed community newspaper).
